In 1865, Pearl built a wood-frame building on the southwest corner of the square. In its early days, the building was used as a school. Later, it became the Roehm Shoe Store for almost 100 years. Coincidentally, in 1865, William Roehm arrived in Washington and opened his first shoe store at another location on the square. He would move into his more recognizable location a few years later.
Gideon R. Hornish opened a store at the corner of Main and Zinser in 1865. The large structure also housed other businesses over the years.
