1868

The Washington Herald newspaper was started in 1868 by Thomas Handsaker despite the newspaper problems of the previous year. A long-experienced newspaperman, Handsaker came to Washington from working at the Tazewell Register in Pekin. The Herald was successful and continued until Handsaker's death in 1880.
