Washington County for Safe Drinking Water

Our group recently formed to raise awareness about the proposed wastewater injection wells near the area surrounding the Marietta and Warren Township drinking water aquifers in Washington County and the threats the wells present to the drinking water and residents. The county takes in the second-highest amount of oil and gas waste in the state - nearly 1/5 of all of the waste coming into the state. Over half of the waste comes from out of state.

STATEWIDE COALITION DEMANDS SWIFT ETHICS PROBE INTO SENATOR BRIAN CHAVEZ; Cites Egregious Conflicts Threatening Safe Drinking Water

WASHINGTON COUNTY, OH – JANUARY 20TH, 2026 – A coalition of Ohio organizations today formalized its support for the ethics complaint which has been filed against Senator Brian Chavez. The endorsement letter was sent to the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee (JLEC) and demands an urgent, transparent investigation.

Toxic “brine” waste from oil and gas drilling contains radioactive materials and heavy metals.
Injection wells used to dispose of this waste have a history of leaks and mechanical failures which puts our groundwater and rivers at risk of contamination.
Washington County has 19 permitted Class II injection wells, six of which are within just two miles of Marietta’s Source Water Protection Area.
Washington County represents just 1.5 percent of Ohio’s land area, but accepts 20 percent of all injected wastewater in the state. Almost half of that waste comes from out of state.

Total statewide 2010-2024: 18,385,326,624 gallons = 27,856 Olympic swimming pools
