This simple intersection located between Hillsboro and North Plains makes the list thanks to community recognition. For a time, the hub made a visit to the Starkeys inevitable for most travelers.
Most of what I know about the corner is from a 1970s newspaper article. It occasionally makes the rounds on Facebook.
The Starkeys were just one in a long procession of landowners. The house today was built before they moved in.
They lived at the house on the NE corner from the 1910s to 40s.
The corner has been associated with their names ever since.
Although boarded up, the house is still there. The name lives on in the garden and nursery that occupies the former Starkey property.
The intersection is approachable from any of the four directions by bike with ample shoulders and smooth tarmac. Same as one hundred years ago, regular travelers, at least bicycle travelers, are bound to visit the Starkeys sooner or later.
