We study whether holding an elected leadership role in a women-only community-driven development programme strengthens women’s civic and political agency in rural Pakistan.
What Do Others Think? Norm Beliefs and Women’s Work in Pakistan

Low female employment can reflect a coordination failure sustained by misperceptions of community support for women’s work. We find that women especially underestimate other women’s approval, and these beliefs are most strongly associated with their search and work histories.
