Privacy policy for Walnut Chess (Android app)
Last updated: 21 October 2026
Summary: this app does not collect, send or share any personal data.
The app asks for no permission on your device, the internet permission included. The one permission Google Play lists is the Google Play billing permission, which only lets the app ask the Play Store app for the optional tip jar (see below). The app never connects to a server, and it contains no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting services.
The chess engine (Stockfish) runs entirely on your device.
The app stores your settings (board colours, pieces, appearance, sound, vibration, the last New game options) and your current game on your device only, so it can resume where you left off. This data never leaves your device through the app. If you have enabled Android's device backup, Android may include this small amount of data in your own backup, under your Google account and Android's backup settings.
When you choose "Share game" or "Save game as file", the app hands the game text (PGN) to the app or folder you pick. What happens next is up to you and that app.
The About screen has an optional tip jar with three one-time "coffees". If you choose one, the payment is handled entirely by Google Play under Google's own terms and privacy policy; the app receives only an on-device confirmation that it went through and sends nothing anywhere. A tip unlocks nothing. The app remembers on your device only that someone tipped, to say thank you.
The About screen contains links to the Walnut Chess web page and to the Stockfish source code. Tapping one opens that page in your browser, outside the app; the page's own privacy policy applies there.
You can delete all app data at any time in Android Settings > Apps > Walnut Chess > Storage > Clear storage, or by uninstalling the app.
The app is not designed for children under 13 and does not knowingly process any data about anyone.
