Walldog Murals

Multiple Walldog murals pepper the town, a glorious addition to our city landscape.  This is the story.

The Walldogs are a group of artists who descend on a town and create historic murals depicting an event in the town's history.  It was seen as both a celebration and an investment that a community would make to potentially bring attention, focus, and economic growth to a town. 

The idea of bringing the Walldogs to Washington goes back to the earliest discussions within the bicentennial committee around 2018.  

The Historical Society contracted with the Walldogs to complete a mural in the summer of 2020.  Curt Reynolds, owner of Brunk's Sports Center, agreed to a mural being painted on the side of his building.  The Historical Society came up with a William Holland theme, and planning began.

The first mural was painted July 9-11, 2020, by Jay Allen, Doug Haffner, & Anat Ronen.  The world was still a little skittish about COVID-19, but many people came out to see the transformation of the blank wall into a dazzling tribute to the city's founder. 

In the first half of 2021, the Historical Society contracted with one of the Walldog painters, Anat Ronen, to paint another mural in town, this time on the side of 106 Washington Square.  It was decided that this mural would honor the bandstands that once stood in the center of the square.  Painting was done in September, 2021.

In 2022, Ronen returned and completed a mural on the south side of the HIstorical Society building as a tribute to the Round Barn.

For Washington's bicentennial year in 2025, three murals were completed.  Anat Ronen returned to paint a prairie landscape on the concrete wall along Wilmor Road.

A mural was completed by Jay Allen and hung in Oliver Thomas Park dedicated to the Sunnyland Lettes softball team.

After years of looking like it should be condemned, the TP&W viaduct was given a beautiful new design.  It was designed by Jay Allen and painted by Doug Haffner and Thomas Washburn.

In 2026, Anat Ronen returned to Washington.  Never quite satisfied with the depiction of William Holland on the 2020 mural, she now had a chance to take her time and  freshen up the head shot.
