The Railroad Viaduct

The date of the construction of the first viaduct on Peoria Street has been lost to time. The TP&W railroad was constructed through Washington in the 1850s. The original viaduct construction, as seen below, was over a dirt road and was not straight. It was made of stone and had no side rails on top.

With the invention of the automobile, changes were needed, so in 1912 a new bridge was constructed at a cost of $10,000. With the exception of the road below and various paint jobs, the 1912 viaduct looked the same as it does today.
