Meeting Point - Yarborough Hotel
The Sunday Walk starts and finishes at the Yarborough Hotel in Grimsby which is next door to the Train Station. The Group meets in the seating area just inside the front doors on the right hand side before the short flight of stairs inside. The free walk starts at 10am and lasts about an hour.
Where Do We Go?
The walk will normally include at least one of the following open green spaces; Ainslie Park, People’s Park, Duke of York Gardens including Freshney River, Grant Thorold Park, Kingston Gardens or Barretts Recreational Park/Scartho Road Cemetery. Where we actually go on the day may be affected by the overnight weather and current weather conditions.
Historical Grimsby can be seen during the walks with many anecdotes being supplied by various walkers remembering their past lives and those of family members. Plenty of wildlife can also be seen especially along the Freshney River and in People’s Park. Recently, quite a few pieces of street art have appeared in and around town, some of which you can see in the photos.

Yarborough Hotel - After the Walk
This hotel was purpose built in 1851 to serve Grimsby’s first railway. The hotel took its name from the 2nd Earl of Yarborough, a director of the railway company, living at nearby Brocklesby. In the 1862 election campaign, the Hotel was the scene of the St. Valentine's Day riot when almost everything within the building was destroyed. The hotel, a symbol of the town’s transition from an 18th-century fishing village into a great Victorian port was once very nearly demolished in the 1960's to make way for shops and offices, managed to survive and is now a listed building.
Although the Yarborough Hotel is a public house and hotel owned now by Wetherspoons, it has been proven to be a great venue for socialising after the walk and especially for the occasions when the walk has had to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions. There is plenty of room here so getting tables is virtually never a problem. Tea & coffee are available with free top-ups if required, other alcohol free drinks are also available and if you feel up to it, there is a good range of real ales, lagers & ciders available at the bar. There is also an extensive food menu should you be feeling peckish after the walk.
Free on-street parking is normally easily available along Brighowgate, Wellowgate or other local streets as it being Sunday, there are very few parking restrictions in force.
