Penrhyn Castle

This was our eighth trip to North Wales to do some coast walking. Usually I drive to the furthest away destination and get transport back to where we would start the walk. Today I decided to drive to where we were going to start the walk and get the public transport back at the end of the walk instead of the beginning. This was to prove a mistake. So parking up in the free seafront car park at Llanfairfechan we immediately set off on our walk, stopping off at Llandudno Junction for brekkie on the way as I feared there would be nowhere open early in these parts of the walk today. The weather was glorious and the first part of the walk was along the coastline, soon arriving at Morfa Madryn nature reserve, I entered in and remembering a previous video I had watched off this coastal walk that this was not the correct path, so soon backtracked out and continued along the coast. Mountains to our left and the Menai Strait to our right with views of Anglesey and Puffin Island. It looked like part of the path was missing in a couple of places, but it was an easy step down onto a large pebble beach for short sections. There was also a path diversion early on in the walk, but that did not pose much of a problem, a short diversion onto a field. The path was easy enough to follow and pretty straightforward, we headed slightly away from the sea to cross a river at a small footbridge and the smell of wild garlic hit us, growing in what looked like private land on our left. Just after the bridge we noticed a few of the plants growing next to the boardwalks so could not resist trying a leaf. tasted to a bit like cheese and onion, Ethan did not like it, not one bit. The path eventually leads out onto a small car park for Morfa Aber Nature Reserve, as I entered the car park we got it slightly wrong and were searching for a way out, there was none, we should have turned left then right onto what was signposted a private drive, once we returned to the private drive signpost realised behind the grass it said footpath only, so we could walk along the drive. the drive soon turns to a grassy path next to the pebble beaches like before, it's a straightforward trek alongside the water that leads slightly up at one point and there was a small section of path missing where the sea has eroded the small embankment. The path leads to another small car park, for the Spinnies Aberogwen nature reserve, this is where the coast path leaves the coast bound inland for a while. We had stopped for a while just before the car park for a little snack break. We left the Menai Strait and followed the lane which lead to a main road, crossed the road and picked up another small lane, a short walk and we were on public footpaths which lead to another lane, passing a rope swing along the way. There were a few rights and lefts but it was well signposted, we crossed a large shallow river and got some amazing views of Snowdonia Mountains from the A5, before heading onto a future industrial park road system which lead to a path which lead to a lane that lead us to an old railway walk just before a ford. We headed onto the tarmac path of the railway walk which followed the small river all the way back into Bangor. We stopped near the viaduct for our sandwich stop. Pre packed food was a good idea for this section of the walk, as after leaving Llanfairfechan we did not pass any shop until the end of the railway walk where we arrived at Porth Penrhyn, where we headed for Bangor along beach Road, passing the promenade and making our way to the Pier. We headed onto the pier (There is a small donation charge) and made our way to the far end for a coffee and an ice cream. Some lovely views to be taken in from the pier of Beaumaris and the Menai bridge to name a few. We decided to end the walk here rather than at the bridge, so once rested we made our way through the City up to the train station at the top of the hill. When we arrived we found that the trains were not running and were replaced with a bus service, it was an hourly service and we must have just missed a bus as there was a 45 minute wait for the next, the man at the station advised us to get a normal bus, but the thought of walking back down the town on this warm sunny day was a bit off putting, especially as there was a pub/hotel across the road that looked very inviting. We purchased our ticket and waited across the road. we headed back across to the station around 10 minutes before the bus was due to find there was now quite a crowd waiting. I'm not a train traveller so had no experience with bus replacements etc. There was a man from the railways to help out with a hi-viz and clipboard, and a coach turned up, which everyone made a run for. My first thought was we had waited 45 mins and we were not all getting on here. Luckily this was only going to a few stations, soon after another coach turned up, followed by a minibus. At first this was a relief which soon left once we realised the minibus for Llanfairfechan only had two spare seats which were soon snapped up. All the coaches departed and the hundred or so people had gone with just 5 of us left standing. The great man from the railways after I had moaned, reassured me that we would only have to wait 10 minutes as he was ordering us a private minibus. So glad we did not charge to get on the packed coaches as we had a nice chat to the railway men and then were driven by the minibus straight back to our car on the seafront. another coffee stop and cake at the beach cafe/bar on the promenade before making our way home.
