Penmon Point Lighthouse
This was our tenth trip to North Wales to do some coast walking, we drove to Beaumaris again, parking near the castle and made the short walk to the pier to continue the coast path. The plan was to make the 11 Mile walk to Llanddona Beach and then phone a taxi to get back to Beaumaris. I had phoned a local company in the week and the owner told me to phone an hour before, so we thought we would arrive and phone taxi and have a chill on the beach. It was a partially cloudy day with the sun poking through and very windy.
We started along the promenade passing Beaumaris Castle, and then a light hill to climb at the end of the promenade, we went through two gates and up on a field and then down lead out onto the B5109 which ran alongside the sea, it was not long before we were sent off the road and on a small path through the trees which lead onto the pebble beach of Fryars Bay. There was a notice about the tide, as a part of this path can be inaccessible at high tide. We made our way onto and along the rocky pebbly beach, This was a lengthy stretch and eventually we pass a rock that can cut off the path at high tide, glorious views of Snowdonia across the Menai Strait and Llandudno's Great Orme in the distance ahead. Eventually we are lead off the beach and to a minor road, a short walk along the road, passing a car park entrance to a picnic site and we are lead back via some steps down to a beach. Walking to the far side of this beach where we are lead off by a ramp and follow the minor road now all the way to Penmon Point. There is a hill along the road to negotiate after it leaves the sea and just before the toll road you are met by Penmon Priory ruins and Dovecot across the road to explore. We continue up the road and then you are treated to a stunning view of Puffin Island as you approach Penmon Point. We made use of the cafe here for a refreshment stop before making our way for another sit down to admire the views of Puffin Island and Penmon Lighthouse.
Then we headed back up the car park and passing the cafe on our left, just after the cafe the coast path we needed split off to the right and headed onto the grass, very well signposted eventually leading to a small lane, where you go right and then left onto fields. Up through a few fields which lead to very narrow roads. There is a lot of minor single track roads and fields to negotiate with many kissing gates to pass through. Eventually the coast path lead back down towards the coast as we entered a National trust area we were met by a large cow that did not want to move off the pathway. We could not go around as there was mud both sides of this path. I tried to pass twice but on both occasions he headed towards me almost like a charge. I retreated twice and we decided to just wait until he moved on. A few minutes and he moved enough for us to make our move. It was then through heathlands on cliff tops with lovely sea views for a while. A large sandy beach came into view in the distance, the end was in sight. We came to a gate, which we passed through and the path went down very steeply, all the way down to sea level, I joked to my Son on the way down how I was glad we were walking anti clockwise as I would not have fancied walking up this path. Little did I know we had taken a wrong turning, I realised once we reached the small pebble beach at the bottom and realised there was no other way out. Oh No!!! the pain, the thought of having to walk all the way back up. We decided to make the most and have a little 10 minute break here and enjoy the beach view. It was gorgeous. Then it was back up after a drink of water and a slice of Millionaire shortbread. We staggered back up, it took it out of me to be fair and then back at the gate where we went wrong there is a coast path sign telling you to go straight on, how did we miss that. The path makes its way down to Llanddona Beach and it was a short walk to the cafe and car park. A lovely long sandy beach with crystal clear waters, this is a well kept secret of Anglesey. There is a free car park, small cafe and public toilets, but it's absolutely stunning. I felt like we had walked after this one, but really enjoyable.
Starting at the entrance to Beaumaris Pier, face the pier from the road and turn left, follow the pavement for a few Metres and turn right ///speeding.shunning.frock and follow the path leading to the sea front, follow the path next to the Menai Strait along the promenade to the far end.
