A standard Smartphone has access to at least the internet, and for many, a data plan. This gives a child broad access to apps (social media apps in particular) and websites that can be very concerning. While some people may choose to buy a flip phone for their child, which is a device that does not have access to the internet or social media, others may choose to give their child a filtered smartphone.Â
For $30USD per year, a person can bring in an existing phone to TAG (Technology Awareness Group). See this website (www.tagtoronto.org) or contact HelpDesk@TAGToronto.org for more information. TAG can put a filter on a smartphone that will prevent all apps except for whatever apps are on an approved list. Because some parents may be okay if their child has games on their phone, TAG can put on a filter blocking specific apps. TAG has been given a list of apps to filter / block for Netivot families part of the pledge.
The apps include:
Tik Tok
Snapchat
Lemon 8
Internet Apps - Safari, Chrome, Firefox
