Call for abstracts

The Workshop on American Indigenous Languages (WAIL) is an annual conference held by UCSB's Department of Linguistics. This conference brings linguists, language activists, and community members together to learn about and advocate for the endangered indigenous languages of North, Central, South America and the Caribbean. This conference aims to introduce community members to the world of linguistics, as well as to contribute to an inclusive, positive culture within the field of linguistics itself. 

Anonymous abstracts are invited for talks on any topic relevant to the study of Indigenous languages of the Americas. Talks will be 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts should be 500 words or less (excluding examples, figures, and/or references). Abstracts and presentations may be given in English, Spanish or Portuguese. 

Individuals may submit abstracts for one single-authored and one co-authored paper. Please indicate your source(s) and type(s) of data in the abstract (e.g. recordings, texts, conversational, elicited, narrative, etc.). For co-authored papers, please indicate who plans to present the paper, who will be in attendance, and who are the corresponding authors.

Abstracts should be submitted in .pdf format via this form Please submit two abstracts:

 1. One with the identifying information of the person or persons giving the presentation along with affiliations and contact information, 

2. Another with no indication of the author(s). 

If authors must be cited, they should be referred to as (Author [DATE]). For the anonymous abstract, please make sure to title the abstract with the name of the presentation/paper and not with the name of the author(s). Author(s) names in anonymous abstract submission may be rejected or the author(s) may be asked to revise and resubmit. 

Presenters at WAIL are eligible for inclusion in the Proceedings of WAIL. Presenters will be given instructions about how to submit their paper for publication in the Proceedings of WAIL in the month after WAIL is held. These papers will be subject to editorial review before being published on our website where they will be publicly available. All papers must comport with the WAIL style sheet (www.wailconference.org/proceedings).

El Workshop on American Indigenous Languages (WAIL) es una conferencia anual organizada por el Departamento de Lingüística de la Universidad de California, Santa Bárbara. Este evento reúne a lingüistas, activistas lingüísticos y miembros de comunidades para aprender sobre y abogar por las lenguas originarias de América del Norte, Centroamérica, Sudamérica y el Caribe. Uno de los objetivos de la conferencia es promover la participación de los miembros de las comunidades en el campo de la lingüística, así como contribuir a una cultura inclusiva y positiva dentro de nuestra disciplina.

Se invita al envío de resúmenes anónimos para presentaciones orales sobre cualquier tema relevante para el estudio de las lenguas indígenas de América. Las presentaciones tendrán una duración de 20 minutos, seguidos de 10 minutos para preguntas y discusión. Los resúmenes deberán tener un máximo de 500 palabras (sin contar ejemplos, figuras y/o referencias). Los resúmenes y las presentaciones podrán realizarse en inglés, español o portugués.

Cada ponente podrá enviar un resumen como individual y otro en coautoría. Por favor, indique las fuentes y tipos de datos utilizados en el resumen (por ejemplo: grabaciones, textos, datos conversacionales, datos elicitados, narrativas, etc.). En el caso de trabajos con varios autores, indique quién realizará la presentación, quiénes asistirán al evento y quién(es) serán los autores de contacto.

Los resúmenes deberán enviarse en formato .pdf mediante este formulario de envío de resúmenes. Se deberán enviar dos versiones del resumen:

1. Un archivo con la información de identificación de la persona o personas que presentarán (nombre, afiliación e información de contacto).

2. Otro archivo anónima, sin ninguna referencia a la autoría.

Si es necesario citar a los autores dentro del resumen, utilice el formato (Autor [AÑO]). En la versión anónima, asegúrese de que el título del resumen sea el de la presentación o ponencia, y no el nombre del autor o autora. Las presentaciones que incluyan nombres en la versión anónima podrán ser rechazadas o se solicitará su corrección y reenvío.

Los ponentes de WAIL son elegibles para publicar sus trabajos en Proceedings of WAIL. Después del evento, se proporcionarán las instrucciones para enviar los textos para su publicación en Proceedings of WAIL, las cuales estarán sujetas a revisión editorial antes de ser publicadas en nuestro sitio web y estarán disponibles públicamente. Todos los artículos deberán ajustarse a la guía de estilo de WAIL (www.wailconference.org/proceedings).
