Basically it is a ball (well a set of balls) that is largely (if not entirely) made from wool/cotton/string (some material along those lines) and the idea is you hit it against a wall as a training aide.

The benefit is that hitting a shuttle against a wall requires a lot of space and a shuttle is quite unpredictable, so by using this ball instead you can more easily practise badminton in your own home.

Delivery: I live in the UK and the balls are shipped from Canada so they were estimated to take 1-2 weeks to arrive. This was pretty much spot on, I ordered on 1st May and they arrived on 8th. Shipping was quite expensive ($8.25 USD!) but I guess it's to be expected.

Price: The balls are $14.95 USD altogether and as I said I also paid $8.25 USD for shipping but if you live in the States or Canada I imagine it would be much cheaper to ship. Don't quote me on that though.

Initially I struggled a bit to hit consistent consecutive strokes so I followed the actual advice which was to practise hitting it up and down just on my racket. This helped me get a bit more of a feel for the balls (the speeds vary a fair bit) and not long after I was able to hit against the wall for a reasonable period of time. It's pretty cathartic ngl.

Current Opinion: Over the past fortnight I've been using them pretty much everyday for around an hour, if not more (I'm currently in the middle of my uni exams so they're a nice way to relax during revision breaks). The main thing I've used them for is practising squeezing the racket whilst hitting the ball. The first time I played badminton after getting the balls I didn't notice any differences but the second time (a week later) I definitely felt like my smashes were better (not amazing, but I got a nice sound out of the plastics we play with).

It's also worth pointing out that I lost the fast ball a few days after I got the balls (it should be somewhere in my room but I have no idea where, I've spent at least an hour looking and it's not a huge room) so I've only really extensively used the slow and medium balls.

If you are relatively inexperienced in badminton and are committed to improving then go for it. If you're already at a reasonably high standard then the cost is probably less justifiable for you, especially if you live far away from Canada.

Ball badminton is a sport native to India. It is a racket sport game, played with a yellow ball made of wool, on a court of fixed dimensions (12 by 24 metres) divided by a net. The game was played as early as 1856 by the royal family in Tanjore, the capital of Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu, India. It enjoys the greatest popularity in India. Ball badminton is a fast-paced game; it demands skill, quick reflexes, good judgment, agility, and the ability to control the ball with one's wrist.[1]

Games are usually played outdoors during the day. As a result, weather conditions wield a considerable influence, and ball badminton's rules allow the effects of weather conditions to be distributed more-or-less evenly between both teams. More recently, indoor versions of the game have been played under artificial lighting. All-India tournaments are conducted regularly using floodlights in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Ball Badminton sport is managed by "Ball Badminton Federation of India". Ball badminton is now an officially recognised game in India. Total 34 units are affiliated to "Ball badminton federation of India " in which 26 are States units including Bihar, jharkhand, Nagaland etc. 5 Public sector units and 3 provisional affiliated units.

Types of incumbentThe ball is yellow wool, from 27 to 30 grams in weight and from 5 to 5.5 cm in diameter. A standard ball-badminton racket usually weighs from 165 to 185 grams and is 63 to 70 cm in length. The strung oval area of the racket should be 20 to 22 across and 24 to 27 cm in length. The net is made of fine cord to make a 2 cm square mesh along its length and is edged with red tape at the top.The entire net is red, white and blue, 100 cm wide and 13.5 metres in length. It is tied to a centre pole of 183 cm and two poles of 185 cm at the sides of the court to maintain the 183 cm height of the net at the centre. Two posts, each 180 cm high, are fixed one metre outside the court on either side at the end of the line to which the net is tied, strong enough to keep the net well stretched. A hook is fixed at 1.5 metres height to each pole to easily tighten the net whenever necessary. The size of the court for "fives" teams is 12 metres wide and 24 metres long. It is divided across the middle by a net line over which the net is hung, the ends of which are attached to the tops of the two posts. The serving crease lines are drawn one metre away from each side of the net line and parallel to it.The centre line is drawn halfway between the serving crease lines and parallel to the sidelines; this divides the space on each side of the crease line into two-halves, known as the right and left courts. The boundary lines are marked with white tape, 10 mm thick. The centre and crease lines are to be marked so as to be visible, about 10 mm wide[3]

A shuttlecock (also called a birdie or shuttle) is a high-drag projectile used in the sport of badminton. It has an open conical shape formed by feathers or plastic (or a synthetic alternative) embedded into a rounded cork (or rubber) base. The shuttlecock's shape makes it extremely aerodynamically stable. Regardless of initial orientation, it will turn to fly cork first, and remain in the cork-first orientation.

So how do you decide? Don't panic, here at Badminton HQ, we've outlined everything you need to know in order make the correct choice.

The most popular badminton shuttlecock in the UK is the Yonex Aerosena AS30 Speed 78. These are used by higher level clubs, in tournaments and for matches, due to it's well known quality. Another very popular shuttle is the Victor Gold Champion, which is similar to the Yonex AS30 or AS40 in terms of consistency and durability.

A competition-grade badminton shuttlecock is crafted from 16 overlapping goose or duck feathers embedded into a cork base. The feathers require a specific curvature that can only be found in the left-wing feathers of a bird. This configuration allows the shuttle to have the very exact weight and aerodynamics needed for elite games.

As a former academic researcher, one thing that has always intrigued me about badminton is just how the badminton shuttlecock actually behaves when in flight and especially precisely how it reacts to spin.

The aerodynamics of Tennis or Table Tennis balls are well understood and have been studied extensively, but the same is not true of the Badminton shuttlecock, which is surprising given that it is the most popular racquet sport in the wold by far (a fact that is not easily understood in the Western World where Badminton is still fairly niche).

The bigger the birdie, the easier it is to acclimate new badminton players to the game! Rainbow colors lower the intimidation factor and allow for exciting games and challenges based on color. Constructed to mimic the flight style, speed, and durability of regular birdies, this is truly a great stepping stone for new players.

Twice the size of traditional birdies (7"L x 5" dia skirt x 2" dia base), these oversized shuttlecocks help beginners and young students to learn the basics of badminton. Bigger birdies are easier to track and hit, setting up players for great volleys and higher confidence that translate into enthusiasm and success.
