Work Permits

WORK PERMITS ARE ONLY ISSUED ONCE A STUDENTS HAS AN OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT.

A WORK PERMIT WILL ONLY BE PROCESSED WHEN THE STUDENT, PARENT, AND EMPLOYER HAVE FILLED OUT THEIR PORTIONS OF THE PERMIT.

ONCE A WORK PERMIT APPLICATION HAS BEEN COMPLETED PLEASE ALLOW 48 HOURS FOR PROCESSING.

Students MUST have 2.0 GPA and a 90% attendance rate to obtain and maintain a permit.

All minors under age 18 (including minors employed by parents) (Ed. C. 49141) must have a work permit.

Work permits must be renewed at the start of each school year or at the time the student obtains a new job. Work permits are required all year, not just when school is in session. Work permits are taken by the student to the employer. Work permits also serve as an age certification and state the maximum hours a minor may work based on their Age (Ed. C. 49160)


Work Hours For Minors By Age

UNDER AGE 12

Prohibited except for entertainment industry.

AGES 12-13

Very resticted and limited employment.

AGES 14-15

School in session: 3 hours maximum per day, Monday - Friday

8 hours per day Saturday - Sunday

18 Hours maximum per week between the hours 7AM and 7PM.

When school is not in session 8 hours max per day; 40 hours per week between the hours of 7AM and 9PM.

Ages 16-17 (NOT ENROLLED IN WORK EXPERIENCE EDUCATION)

School in session: 4 hours maximum per day, Monday - Friday

8 hours per day Saturday - Sunday

20 Hours maximum per week between the hours 5AM and 10PM.

When school is not in session 8 hours max per day; 40 hours per week between the hours of 5AM and 10PM.

Ages 16-17 (ENROLLED IN WORK EXPERIENCE EDUCATION)

School in session: 6 hours maximum per day, Monday - Friday

8 hours per day Saturday - Sunday

36 Hours maximum per week between the hours 5AM and 12:30AM.

When school is not in session 8 hours max per day; 40 hours per week between the hours of 5AM and 12:30AM. Working after 10PM requires permission of parent and school Work Experince Coordinator on required form submitted with minor's application for Work Permit. (L.C. 1392.1)
