The Land Development Design Industry (LDDI) at Virginia Tech is dedicated to advancing education and professional development in land development design. Through close collaboration between faculty and industry professionals, LDDI bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world practice.
Students gain valuable insight into the land development process while building lasting connections with professionals who are shaping communities across the region and beyond. Supported by strong industry partnerships, LDDI continues to foster innovation, sustainability, and excellence in civil engineering education.
(LDDI Recognizes its Founding Members)
2005 – LDDI began as a direct response by Dr. Bill Knocke and Dr. Randy Dymond to calls from alumni in industry to expand coverage of the land development discipline in undergraduate civil engineering education.
2006 – Industry professionals and Virginia Tech alumni rallied behind the concept through outreach events and “Road Shows” held across Virginia.
2007 and Beyond – The Land Development Design Initiative (LDDI) was officially established, creating a bridge between students and the land development industry.
Following Years – LDDI grew rapidly, expanding its curriculum, partnerships, and industry involvement while becoming a national model for collaboration in civil engineering education.
2022 – Gary Bowman made a transformative multi-millon dollar gift to advance sustainable land development education, establishing the Bowman Sustainable Land Development Program—the sixth program area in the CEE Department and the second endowed program alongside the Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program (VCEMP).
The mission of LDDI is to advance land development design education, foster professional interaction, and enhance research efforts in the land development field.
LDDI’s primary objectives are:
Improving land development design education, including increasing student awareness of land development design as a career path
Increasing interaction between practitioners and undergraduate civil engineering students at Virginia Tech
Enhancing research efforts in the land development area
