What is HSC?

High School Conference is a free, one-day program filled with student workshops and various activities designed to assist high school students in their preparation for college and beyond. High School Conference typically gathers about 150 students and youth from all across California to promote the importance of higher education, learn all the options and routes to achieving it, and experience a day of fun in the company of peers and mentors.

The Importance of HSC

HSC’s target demographic has changed drastically since it first began in 1983, only 8 years after the fall of Saigon. Vietnamese refugees had congregated in certain areas, like Orange County. Students who had struggled to assimilate to life in America and by their own willpower and determination got into UCLA felt the need to give back to their communities and show high school students how they did it. They wanted to expose students to a college campus and help them understand the application process because their parents couldn’t. Vietnamese-Americans have acculturated and embraced permanent life in America.

Why do we host this event annually?

• Break stigmas about different schools to students and parents

• Debunk model minority myth

• Give students support system

• Empower students to take initiative

• Bridge cultural gaps between students and parents

• Spread awareness about education rates in our community today
