The 4th National Symposium on VLSI & Embedded Systems at the Goa University was organized by VSI Goa Chapter and the department of Electronics, Goa University. The Symposium was inaugurated by Dr. C. P. Ravikumar, Secretary, VLSI Society of India and was presided over by Prof. Dileep Deobagkar, Vice Chancellor Goa University. Dr. Rajendra S. Gad, Co-ordinator of the Symposium introduced the dignitaries to delegates. Dr. Ravikumar in his inaugural remark said that VLSI Society of India is open to such collaborative programs all over India. Prof. Deobagkar, Vice Chancellor correlated the theme of symposium i.e. Very Large Scale Integration to that of Very Large Society Integration. He elaborated on having integration of Small group to large groups for better performance of System. Mr. Deepak Chodankar, President, VSI Goa-Chapter mentioned that such events help students and researchers in the region of Goa and expose them to the frontiers in the fields of Technology. Mrs. Komala Soares, Secretary gave vote of thanks. All together 98 participants attended the event, and provided a positive feedback.There were two tutorial sessions for the benefit of researchers and students in the upcoming areas of Technologies. Dr. C. P. Ravikumar, Texas Instruments India; was a keynote speaker and presented on the topic From Semiconductor Devices to VLSI Systems-on-Chip - An unparalleled story of innovation. Mr. Gopal Gangadharan, ALTERA Country Manager, Bangalore, presented on the topic Altera 40nm Programmable Logic Devices Leadership. The Symposium had two technical sessions i.e. Session I: VLSI and Session II: Embedded Systems. All together 10 oral papers and 9 Poster presented during the event. The oral paper Session-I was chaired by Dr. R. K. Kamat, Reader, Electronics, Shivaji University, Kolhapur and Session-II by Dr. A. M. Khan, Reader, Electronics, Mangalore University, Mangalore. The review of paper was carried out by Dr. C. P. Ravikumar, Texas Instruments & Dr. Antonio Mascareinhas, Scientist, MICD, NIO, Goa. The oral presentations were judged by Mr. Deepak Deshpande, Smart-link, Verna, Goa; Mr. Gajanan Navelkar Scientist, MICD, NIO, Goa; and Mr. Anil Raikar, Persistence Pvt. Ltd, Verna Goa.Mr. Gopal Gangadharan, Altera Country Manager was the chief guest for Valedictory function. Dr. Mohan M. Sangodkar, Registrar Goa University, presided over the function. Mr. Anil Raikar was a special invitee. Mr. Gopal commended Goa University on performing an excellent job in the areas of Embedded System design. Dr. Mohan Sangodkar said that in the Globalized world, India and China are upcoming economies. He also said that India is having sizeable young generation and said higher education, knowledge & Service sectors can play role in leading India in near future. Prof. Gourish M. Naik, Convener of the Symposium and Head of Department said that over the ten years of period, Electronics program at the Goa University has done commendable progress as seen by more and more funds pumping in for research from several funding agencies. Vote of thanks was given by Dr. R. S. Gad. The selected best papers were awarded.
