Free VR Islands
Developers have made islands available for visiting and artists have made islands available for free / Creative Commons use - in courses, students use these often as a basis for their own ongoing development. Details about building islands are in my courses and you can see the Operations Document for creating islands at this link; obviously there are processes involved to getting access to these islands. For here though, visit the links and resources to see the wide array of islands that have been made freely available.
Created Islands that can be visited
This link brings you to islands that are available for review or visiting (look at the bottom of the web page).
Islands that can be gathered without charge
You can develop or acquire pre-made islands with Creative Commons licensing (OAR - opensim archives). These pre-made islands can be modified. Since it takes time to gather and open OARs, some videos and presentations of islands are shown with some below to save you time in determining if they could serve your purposes
ZADAROO: has resources and materials often created by Linda Kellie - look through the OAR page (opensim archives - islands) to see what is available. https://zadaroo.com/
OUTWORLDZ: Below are sneak previews (videos / slideshows) of works /ideas you can find from Outworldz; section 2.b.iii reviews how you can download these items. You can use the entire island or upload it and take inventory ideas then return to your earlier islands. See the notes further below about using these islands "safely."
Understanding what can be accomplished if you create a "story" and a setting in VR - consider this African wildlife hunting/saving story - https://www.outworldz.com/OpenSim/posts/Virunga/default.htm
The Pirate Cove has many interesting shops, ships, hotels, pirate ships, and pubs for the saucy pirate; - 8 minute video (artifacts & ships)
A Winter Wonderland with skating, ponds, snowflakes, snowmen gypsy vans, and Gothic churches - slides
Steampunk island - could upload but there was trouble saving the whole island to Kitely – but you can acquire items from this island for your inventory; 2 min video on Steampunk ;
Eden is an ancient setting with visually beautiful buildings & some animal images - there are some assembled buildings but many need to be linked together if you want to put them in your inventory - 3 minute video on Eden - this 3-min video shows more of Eden & shows how to gather items of your avatar's inventory; slides about Eden;
A Middle Eastern oasis village with buildings, pools, pyramids, camels; slides
A desert military-training used by the US (made available) with military vehicles, resources, environments - slides
Ballerina and islands with swan song like resources - slides
Medieval Village – with settings from a rather authentic city with avatar characters – possibly for a class (what might be a story about what is happening in the village itself?) – 3 minute video
This Epic Citadel has a base camp with tents and then a medieval castle and village, however, many areas are meshes/images and really serve as backdrops; 3 minute video
Use a creepy art deco Sanitarium that takes up on island; or repurpose it with more “fun” art throughout and have an interesting setting - 5 min video / slides
Have Banquets and Weddings and many outdoor and game activities - 2 min video and slides
An English landscape with trains - a modern looking city / suburban area with trains; slides

WHEN GATHERING ISLANDS from free sources:
Check the landing spot and change as needed; the content itself (delete objectionable or unwanted areas); determine if some buildings became phantom and remove this feature if you want to have avatars walk in these buildings; look for building, artifacts, and Non-playing characters & save them in your inventory, check the access rights; if you are happy w/ your island, then make a backup copy in your server account so you can swap islands in and out
Here are links to MANY downloadable islands that you can then upload onto your server - scroll down; at the end of the scroll page you can click to more pages - the most recent are at the top and there are more complex OARs there - many, many good files to save one your computer then bring to your virtual worlds - https://www.outworldz.com/cgi/freesculpts.plx
since immersive environments (such as Second Life), became available affordably through open source vendors; using premade islands have allowed for rapid setup, these are available for free from generous developers - https://www.outworldz.com/download/
