Basic Building

VR – QUICKSTART: UPLOAD TEXTURES; PLACE PRE-MADE ITEMS & MAKING BASIC SHAPES /links to videos

NOTE: you need to have access to building area by (a.) using a sandbox area where objects remain for a specified time, (b.) having joined a Group by the owner, or (c.) being the owner.

Create / gather your own images - you can get photos, images, slides saved from PowerPoint or Google slideshow, or any jpg or png and bring put them on a shape or an object (as shown below); you can also save Snapshots in Firestorm and put them on shapes you make or on pre-made shapes; the first step (after creating or locating the image) is to upload it to your avatar’s inventory -

  • click the Inventory icon on screen bottom (in Firestorm), click the + sign > upload the image into your Inventory by following the prompts - give it a name and a location that you will remember;

  • after making the shape you want (see further below) - you can put that image on the shape or object by right-clicking on the item > click Edit > click on the face where you want the image to go > click on Texture tab in the middle > click on Texture > locate and click-on the texture you want; here’s a 2 min video - the part w/ the texture upload is towards the middle

  • Gather desired pre-made items from Marian or Mariantest Island by right-clicking object then More > Take Copy which puts items in your Inventory (3.5-minute video – since the video, some inventory has been moved)

• (Due to island changes this is currently Mariantest is available as a sandbox) Move to Mariantest (this has a sandbox area; you can build in other sandbox areas too) by clicking map icon in bottom right > type Mariantest in Find box > Find > double click on one of the flat areas that opens > find a place where you can build — the sandbox areas can be changed / the island may look different (2-minute video);

• Once at the location where you can build, open the Inventory icon, four in from the bottom right and click-and-drag the desired inventory item onto the ground — avoiding pulling it on to your avatar;

  • position the item by first right-clicking on the item to bring up the editing features > using the arrows to position the item; by holding CTRL on the keyboard as you position the item you also get a wheel that allows you to orient the item in different positions as well (3-minute video) –

  • HINT: if you hold SHIFT on the keyboard when you are pulling on a directional arrow you pull out a copy of that object;

Make simple shapes by right-clicking on ground > select Create > click on desired shape > modifying shape size and location as you did with the inventory items above (3-minute video)

  • Create multiple objects > position them to make a complex shape > while in the Edit mode, on the Building dialog box, click Link; click General tab & type name. Then right-click the object & click Take or Take Copy to put in your Inventory; click on the Inventory/Suitcase icon on screen bottom > locate the named inventory item > click-and-drag on the ground) (3.5 minute video)

  • Should you inadvertently pull an object onto your avatar, right click the object > Detach (1-minute video)

  • Continue to move into position buildings, seating and furniture, plants and vegetation, pathways and other objects you have designed to create the desired effect
