Joining SERT does not require ANY past experience, training, or certifications, and all we ask is that you are willing to commit to the program and the time it takes to be an active member. SERT members are split into two categories, certified and non-certified. The main difference between the two is that certified members have completed FEMA's 20-hour Community Emergency Response Team training and have committed to meeting and training more frequently. Non-certified members are still highly trained and are prepared with the necessary skills to respond in an emergency, however are students who do not want to commit as much of their time to SERT, however still want to be a part of the program.
Leadership Team:
The SERT leadership team consists of the Coordinator, who oversees and runs the entire program and acts as the SERT Incident Commander during an emergency, two Assistant Coordinators who assist the coordinator with their duties and manages different divisions of SERT during an emergency, and the Logistics Coordinator who manages all documentation, member accountability, and other administration functions of the team. In addition, SERT is broken up into 5 teams, each with a Team Leader who is in-charge of their group of members.
Certified Members:
Certified members are students who have completed FEMA’s 20-hour CERT basic training course, and have shown dedicated interest to the program. During a school emergency, certified members will respond as part of the school’s EOP, and be used for search and rescue teams, triage, and other hands-on operations.
Requirements:
-FEMA CERT Certified
-Completion of SERT Training
-Weekly Meetings
-Bi-Monthly Weekend Trainings
-Attendance at all meetings and events
Non-Certified Members:
Non-certified members are students who have NOT completed the 20-hour FEMA training course but are still interested in being on SERT, learning about emergency response, and school safety. During a school emergency, non-certified members will act as runners, help at the incident command, and other jobs that do not require advanced training.
Requirements:
-Completion of SERT Training
-Attendance at non-certified member events
At the start of each school year, SERT opens applications to all students in grades 9-12 who are interested in joining SERT. Following the initial application, SERT holds their yearly training for all members both new and current, which usually takes place over the weekend. This training is led by our amazing Campus Safety staff and covers every type of emergency the school could encounter and how SERT members respond in those situations. The training also includes triage, first aid, search and rescue, fire suppression, self defense, incident command skills, and more. All members, both certified and non-certified, are required to attend this training.
In addition, members who wish to be certified-members must complete FEMA's 20-hour CERT training course which is usually hosted once a year at Viewpoint's campus and is taught by local first responders. This training takes everything students learned in the SERT training course, and delves much deeper into the skills they already learned. Students become proficient in their first aid, triage, search and rescue, and fire suppression skills.
