Q: What's going on/How will this affect my child's education?
A: The BHM School District has proposed large budget cuts for the 2020-2021 school year ($2.9 million dollars). Proposed cuts will lead to higher class sizes, less time individually between students and their teachers, fewer choices for students and their parents/guardians, less support for students and parents/guardians, and less alternative education offerings.
Q: Why do we need a levy?
A: The Minnesota State Government increases the budget given to public schools by 2% each year to account for inflation. However, inflation has been greater than 2% for many years. For a district budget, 1% is a large differential. The last levy passed in this district was in 2002. As you can imagine, 17 years without increasing the per pupil spending and deficit for the inflation factor, adds up.
Q: What other districts have this problem?
A: All of our neighboring districts have recently gone out for a levy or are going out for a levy.
Q: More specifically, what could we see happen in the next few years?
A: Some of the things that will happen will be the reduction of teaching staff, closing Phoenix Learning Center, closing Discovery, completely eliminating both the Quest Program and CIS options in the high school, and even eliminating the wRight Choice out-of-school suspension program.
Q: What activities will be cut?
A: Buffalo Community Middle School would cut funding for every sport and activity at the school. Buffalo High School would lose four sports — Boys Swimming and Diving, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, and the Dance Team.
Q: When would these cuts go into effect?
A: It could be as soon as this 2019-2020 school year.
Q: What can I do to help?
A: The BHM community should choose to support additional funding in the form of a levy by Voting YES on the ballot on November 5th. You can also volunteer with Citizens Supporting Our Schools through the Volunteer tab.
