Who is Ryan Fiereck?
I’m Ryan Fiereck—a lifelong public education advocate, union leader, and community servant based in Bethel, Minnesota. For nearly 20 years, I’ve dedicated my career to teaching and lifting up the voices of educators and working families. I believe in public education because I’ve lived it—as a student, a teacher, a union leader, and a parent.
Education and Teaching Career
For the past 19 years, I’ve taught Business and Computer Technology in St. Francis Area Schools. My experience spans grades K–12, and I’ve worked in a variety of settings—from general education classrooms to special education programs and alternative education sites like the Bar-None Level 4 Treatment facility. I also teach in Saints Online, our district’s full-time virtual learning program. No matter the setting, my goal is always the same: to make sure every student—regardless of their background or ability—has access to a high-quality education and the tools they need to succeed.
Union Leadership and Advocacy
I currently serve as president of Education Minnesota – St. Francis, where I lead a proud, unified local of licensed staff, educational assistants, food service workers, transportation staff, early childhood educators, and office professionals. I’ve stood side by side with our members at the bargaining table and on the picket line, organizing and advocating to meet the real-life challenges they face. At the state level, I serve on the Education Minnesota Governing Board representing At-Large Zone 3. I’ve also served on the Executive Committee and Budget and Finance Committee, and I chair both the Pension Advocacy Group and the Pension Task Force. In 2022, I was elected Vice President of Education Minnesota. Through all of these roles, I’ve focused on strengthening our union from the ground up—making sure every voice is heard and every local has the support it needs to thrive.
Political Engagement
Back in 2012, I ran for the Minnesota House in District 31A as a DFL-endorsed candidate. I wasn’t elected, but I gained a deeper understanding of the political process and an even stronger commitment to fighting for fully funded public education, strong communities, and policies that support working families.
Family
Family is at the heart of everything I do. I’m a proud husband and the father of three amazing kids, all of whom attend St. Francis Area Schools. Being a public school parent gives me a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities our schools face. I understand what it means to juggle sports schedules, navigate special education plans, and trust educators to care for your kids every day. My family keeps me grounded and reminds me of why this work matters so much.
Community Involvement
My commitment to public service has extended beyond the classroom and the union. I’ve served as a volunteer firefighter in Bethel, Minnesota—a role that’s taught me the importance of being there for your neighbors in their greatest moments of need. Whether responding to emergencies or helping organize community events, I believe in showing up and giving back.
Personal Interests
When I’m not working, you’ll probably find me on the golf course, flipping through comic books, or talking superheroes with my kids. I love the power of a good story—whether it’s a Marvel epic or a real-life moment of growth in the classroom. I believe joy, humor, and connection are just as important as strategy and policy in this work.
Vision and Leadership Philosophy
I lead with empathy, equity, and action. I believe every educator—regardless of job title, background, or zip code—deserves fair pay, a secure retirement, and access to affordable healthcare. I believe in racial and gender equity, in lifting up underrepresented voices, and in building systems that truly serve all members. I believe that strong locals build a strong union, and that collective power is how we create meaningful change. Whether I’m at the bargaining table, in a board meeting, or talking with members one-on-one, I lead with integrity, courage, and heart. This work isn’t about me—it’s about us. And I’m ready to keep showing up, standing up, and speaking out for our schools, our students, and our profession.
