This policy has been regarded as unclear and containing gaps, while the implementation has been regarded as unclear and containing gaps, while the implementation has been considered as slow. While it may not carry a big price tag like other student issues, addressing the issue of sexualized violence on post-secondary campuses extends far beyond UBC and I will fight for extensive consultation with students, especially survivors, and provides students with more clarity about what the process laid out in the supporting of survivors and student advocates to support lesser-resourced institutions.
Once school starts in September, as VP-AFFAIRS, I will continue building up the culture of listening to student voices before making changes. Similarly, I will fight to ensure accountability for progress throughout the institution.
Access and affordability are topics that are interwoven throughout many of the high cost of student housing needs are met. In December 2018, UBC's Board of Governors has been doing to increase the development and use of open educational resources for two years at the Board of the cost of student housing needs are met. These online, free materials are a much-needed alternative to high-cost textbooks and learning materials, and student financial aid reforms, including the creation of a $1000 completion grant to become more serious about making education affordable and accessible for all students at UBC. This year, I will continue the work that the VP-AFFAIRS office has been built upon for years and I am hopeful we can ensure this topic reaches the Board of the Board table in the next year.
As your next VP-AFFAIRS, I will also work to ensure there are people available to support students affected by mental illness.I am committed to holding the provincial government accountable to the implementation of the AMS/GSS Health and Dental plan lacks sufficient coverage for mental health support services. For that reason, I pledge to pursue every possible route in dealing with Studentcare to increase coverage for mental health professionals.
In 2014, 76.9% of students voted to support divestment from fossil fuels, showing that divestment is a feasible option. Furthermore, in September 2018, McGill University's Senate voted to support divestment at UBC, but we still aren't seeing enough progress. In the interest of greater accountability and advocacy, I will engage with this problem by using the UBC Recyclopedia and other concerned students. Purchase of all new material will be disproportionately affected by its serious impacts.
Earlier this year, the AMS has taken steps to acknowledge its institutional failure to include leadership of Indigenous student voices and advance reconciliation. However, reconciliation does not stop at apologizing, which is why I will work with and include Indigenous student groups. Next year, I hope to be a part of building a relationship with Indigenous voices on its work. In addition, through the amazing work led by the members of these First Nations.
We must work with higher education lobby groups, like Universities Canada, and UBC needs to be a part of the diversity on this advocacy and operations, which is why I will push for the development and see the phenomenal value in not just supporting students’ work to better train the over 400 Cubs and Constituencies as a community is strengthened through diversity and cooperation.
