Workshop Series in von Neumann Algebras and Geometric Group Theory

April 13-16, 2023 - The University of Iowa

Overview

The purpose of this workshop series is to foster new interactions between von Neumann algebras and various areas in group theory. These workshops are organized by Ionut Chifan, Adrian Ioana, Denis Osin and Jesse Peterson and are supported by their NSF collaborative joint project FRG: Collaborative Research: von Neumann Algebras Associated to Groups Acting on Hyperbolic Spaces (FRG-DMS-1854074, FRG-DMS-1853989, FRG-DMS-1854194). Information on the previous two workshops can be found here and here.

This is the last workshop in the sequence and will be held in-person at the University of Iowa. It will feature three lecture series along with a dozen talks and an open problems session by experts in operator algebras, group theory and other related fields. The workshop will provide a forum for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and more senior mathematicians within institutions to interact, exchange ideas and promote mathematical growth in these areas. In addition, the organizers will target participation of students, postdocs and faculty from underrepresented categories in STEM. The workshop is also supported by the Mathematics Department at The University of Iowa.

The organizers are grateful to volunteering PhD students Juan Felipe Ariza Meija, Michael Davis, Adriana Fernandez Quero and Niki Amaraweera Kalutotage for their constant help on the logistics of this workshop.
