In the KMZ Volcano Earth file and in Sheets, I have updated as many streaming video links as I could find and am halfway through (I've finished the Mediterranean folder) checking all other links. Also the DVP file is updated as is the latest Where Am I Tour Archives.
Also Augusst is coming, and that means VolQueso. This year I plan to have the more-or-less official movie-nite fun hosted from this site. (Start date TBA)
I've updated all links to streaming videos in the KMZ file. I'm also slowly working my way through updating the rest and culling out nonworking links. In Volcano News news, KVERT site has gone AWOL so I am using data from EMSD instead.
Between the news blog, day job, two dogs and life-in-general, my time has become a bit harder to manage, and so I am working on streamlining certain aspects of this site so I can keep things working smoothly and up-to-date without burning completely out.
This next few weeks I will be concentrating on tidying up the Google Earth KMZ, Sheets and VueMesiter and clearing out nonworking links etc.
My long-term plan is to prioritize my online assets thusly.

WHEN I finally re-establish some kind of workflow/routine/schedule for keeping Volcano Earth in order, it will hopefully mean a better experience for you and less stress for me.
Also there's only 60 baking-days til Vulcanalia.
I've relinked a few live streams, and also upgraded the Google Sheets webcam sheet with a bit of concatenation that will automatically generate the date-formatted links to the MAGMA gallery to always show the most recent ten-days images.
Volcano eruption dates are now updated.
I've updated the webcams spreadsheet and KMZ files, relinking livestreams and checking for long-offline webcams.
Going forward, I will classify webcams that have been stuck or offline for more than a month as offline, and after six months, extinct. I will continue to make weekly checks of streaming webcams.
Also GVP has updated the VoTW data base a few days ago so I will be updating any necessary eruption data in the Volcanoes folder.
I finished updating all the volcano pins to the slightly new format and in fitting with the new organization of volcanic regions according to GVP.
Webcams and data pins will remain organized by the old regional system, by contry, and by observatory.
The Sunda-Banda Volcanic Regions are finished, and tomorrow I hope to tackle at least part of the Iceland Newvolcanic Rift Volcanic Province folder. (spoiler, there's oodles of volcanoes in that one)
Not only am I halfway through updating the Sunda Volcanic Arc folder, but I have also added a new pair of webcams pointed at Spurr in Alaska. They are actually pretty close to CKT station, but one is a regular view and the other is telephoto. That's as much as I know because both appear to currently be snowed-over.
Also GVP is working on the Search page on their site. It is still functional but kind of a mess. They are aware and I suspect the mess is part of an eventual improving of the Search interface.
MORE volcano pins revamped, and tomorrow I start in on the Sunda-Banda Volcanic Regions folder.
Did I mention that Indonesia has an unfair amount of volcanoes?
Also I have decided to keep the Webcams folder hierarchy as-is. Otherwise there would be some volcanoes being taken away from their observatory or country of origin to join their kin in their newly-designated volcanic region...and I don't know how well some of them might adjust. Thus the update schedule will remain the same for now UNLESS I am daft enough to take on yet another web project.
Just a quick update. I have updated the volcano pins in my KMZ files to the new format all the way through the Northwest Pacific Volcanic Regions folder. That is to say I have done all the volcanoes of North and South America, Kamchatka and the Caribbean. With Iceland and Indonesia looming ahead I can at least say I'm halfway through.
Also this lets me catch a few revisions I've missed. And in deciding to host all the images on my Imgur account, I have built one fine folder of volcano photographs (including credits and CC licenses). I will be sure to add it to the page where I have my #DVP galleries.
I have begun updating the volcanoes pins in the KMZ files. In true Volcanohead fashion I have bit off way more than I can politely chew, but I have completely finished up the volcanic regions of South America and have a good start on the rest.
The big changes are that I am adapting the folder tree structure to match the new VoTW database, including volcanic region name on the data cards, moving all links (GVP, related volcano observatory, and Volcano News tag links) to the bottom of the data card, and am slowly but surely replacing any hotlinked images from GVP with images linked back to my Imgur account, where the image can be viewed with some descriptiive text as well as any required CC licensing information. Fortunately for my sanity, just about every image at GVP has a CC BY-SA or CC BY-NC deed.
I figure on getting at least two dozen data pins updated per day in addition to resumed curation schedule for webcam pins and in addition to the News blog.
Would it be untoward of me to set up a tips jar? I gotta keep myself in coffee.
I am putting off daily KMZ curation this week while I get the Volcanoes folder sorted out properly. I have finished adding any new volcanoes tagged in my news blog, but its looking like I may end up rethinking how my webcams, data pins and spreadsheets are organized.
I think I need another coffee.
BIG changes are coming, slowly but surely.
Now that GVP has implemented their new system of grouping volcanoes by region, I am beginning a massive redo of the Volcanoes folder in my KMZ file. Not only am I regrouping them, but also (as previously promised and put-off) adding in any new pins to volcanoes tagged in my News blog.
Also, in the interest of what's-right, I am replacing all images linked from GVP to fair-usage images linked from my Imgur account.
Obviously this isn't an overnight job, so I will be setting time aside each day to get at least a few dozen pins updated.
For a short time though, bear with me while the Volcanoes folder experiences a bit of a fruit-basket-turnover.
I'm sad to report we've lost the WebcamsdeMexico views of Popocatepetl at SNR and Panoaya. The SNR view of El Popo was the first non-Icelandic webcam I ever saw so it was kind of a sentimental thing. I am holding out hope that maybe they are upgrading to HD webcams at those locations.
I have moved the Alaska ashcams from the Alaska Data folder to the Alaska Webcams folder. They are now a subfolder of that folder.
I will add in the new HVO V2 streaming webcam tomorrow afternoon.
Going forward, the cut-off time for Volcano News will be 18:00 EDT (6pm local) or 22:00 UTC. After that, any new news will have to wait until the next day's report. I usually set aside 1 to 2 hours in the afternoon to gather the news as well as update the Volcano Earth files
I finally got the South America volcano pins updated to include links to each volcano's page (or as close as I could manage) at its observatory and (where applicable) a link to my News blog to pull up all tagged posts for that volcano.
Now I just need to make pins..and probably a few new subfolders too..in the Volcanoes folder for the NMI and American Samoa volcanoes as well as the rest of CalVO and AVO.
I'm ALMOST done updating the existing volcano placemarkers with the new links to its observatory and its tag on my news blog. I only need to do the South America folder (which is huge) and then go back and add in any other volcanoes that are not yet there.
After a whole lot of procrastination (as opposed to amateurcrastination) I have updated the VueMeister (both the download version and the available-online versions on this site).
Also I will be including jump-links on my Volcano News blog pages to make navigation (especially on mobile) a lot quicker. The first implimentation of it was on yesterday's (5 March) news page.
Finally, I have begun updating volcano pins in the KMZ files to include links to the observatories that look after them and (when applicable) a link to my Volcano News blog that will search up a list of all posts that included news of that particular volcano. So far I have completed retrofitting the existing volcano pins up through the Kamchatka folder. Once I have all existing pins done, I will make pins for all the volcanoes I've been reporting on that don't yet exist in the VE KMZ.
I've updated South America including re-linking all the IGEPN webcams in both VE and Sheets. I've not yet done the VueMeister but will get that later today.
Also on the slate for this next week is to start work on the Volcano News integration in VE. This means quite a few new volcano pins to be added in addition to the existing ones that will just be getting a new line of code added.
In other other news, y'all please include the people working for USGS and the various US VOs in your prayers/thoughts/well-wishes. There's a lot of uncertainty and worry going around, and it's not the fault of the volcanoes this time.
I've updated the KMZ including culling out a few long-offline webcams.
More importantly, now that GVP has updated their VoTW database, I have updated my own VE Volcanoes folder to show dates for all last-eruptions as of 21 February.
Over the next few days I will check other folders for broken/offline links, update the VueMeister, and if I have time left, start inegrating links from the Volcano News blog to my VE files. Soon you will see a new link appearing on some volcano pins that will open a search-results page on Volcano News that includes any posts tagged with that volcano in descending order by date.
I just found I can embed my Volcano News blog right into this page and save having to make duplicate copies of my daily news here.
The Wordpress Volcano News blog is coming along nicely. I'm getting into my workflow gathering/editing/translating/formatting the various reports, and am now working on a tag index page (since WP only shows the top active tags rather than alllll the tags..and I have sooo many tags).
I got the Indonesia pins reformatted so that all include links to the MAGMA gallery and a few also include a link to their volcano's CCTV page.
I still need to add that link to the Montserrat webcam. I'll do that tomorrow IF nothing erupts.
It turns out the Kamcahtka webcams I thought I needed to add were already there, but under a different name from what's on the KVERT site.
In other good news the MAGMA CCTV webcams for the most part came back online. Tomorrow or the next day I hope to sort out the Indonesia folder so that all placemarkers will have a single image and entry for CCTV and gallery on each location.
Also tomorrow I think I will go through the Alaska Ashcam folder and make it more evident which ones have good views of their volcanoes.
I have a dang BLOG! I just finished adding today's laaaate volcano news report to my aptly-named Volcano News blog on Wordpress. I will continue to post the last 7 days here, though they will not be formatted like over on my blog (where formatting is way less of an ordeal than here on Google Sites).
Here is the link. And thanks to archives and tags you can even find up all mentions of any of the volcanoes I've reported on (at least back to the 3rd of February).
I'm also real happy with the layout, where you get a short summary and featured image from each post. Also you can make comments, a feature I really hope won't get abused.
My only real beef with it is that there was no dark-themed option for that layout available for bloggers like me working with a budget of pocket-lint. Luckily there are browser extensions out there for desktop computers that fix that problem. It DOES seem to cooperate with the dark-theme settings on my mobile though. Yay.

Those other special projects I promised to do will get done tomorrow.
I will be investigating migrating the bulk of my Volcano News to a blogging platform like Blogger which I will provide links to individual posts in the section above. I get the feeling that a seven-days history of reports might be inadequate when so many volcano reports arrive on a monthly (or less regular) basis. I am specifically looking for a blog platform with robust tagging and embedding features.
For now this will not impact what's going on here. IWLYK when anything "goes live".
I am still refining format/style for my volcano news section above to make it a more digestible read.
In KML news I have just discovered some new Kamchatka webcams that I hope to get added to the map on one of my special-projects days.
Yes I am aspiring to be a volcanfluencer, but I need a staff. My offer still stands for anybody who wants to be an intern here. The position still doesn't pay, you'd have to be willing to live in the U.S, and also be very fond of coffee, dubstep, and beagles, and the only perk is that I am delightful company, or so my beagle tells me so.
Those CCTV webcams for MAGMA Indonesia did not last very long. Only Awu and Ijen have provided new images within the past 10 days. BUT to make up for that, we have a new HD view of Semeru from AfarTV. (Cam B) just 3 km east of Cam A.
There's a new view in Costa Rica (Mexico & Central America folder) of Irazu. The camera once pointed at Turrialba now faces west to see Irazu's summit crater.
In the South America volcanoes folder you'll find a new pin for Sangay, and in the South America webcams folder there's a new (or at least new to me) webcam pointed at it.
The webcam on Martinique has resumed watching Pelee.
Also I have begun listing my volcano news in alphabetical order based on agency names. AND I am still fine-tuning my workflow (i.e. figuring out what in heck I'm doing). I'm finding out that MS Edge has the best in-browser PDF reader and the best in-browser PDF translator. I'm actually a little disappointed that I have not amassed a small collection of my own "Mistranslation Tuesday" memes.
Just letting everyone know I'm still "finding my stride" on the Volcano News section. There might be subtle changes in formatting and I'm now working on a docs "hotsheet" to keep up with all of my sources, which volcanoes I have reported on (and which ones I've not paid enough attention to) and such. I'm also trying to figure out how to include images where needed. The dropdown/hidden sections work well with text but not so well with images.
I have added playlist links to Bromo, Merapi and Semeru to this site's LavaTube page.
In the Kamchatka folder, Maly Semiachik's webcam has resumed working.
In what might be the most unexpected mass resurrection in Volcano Earth history or future, MAGMA Indonesia has fixed their CCTV image page after almost a year of being nonfunctional due to either broken links or broken javascript (or was it sumatrascript?). But those old CCTV cams are back and I've added them back into the KMZ as well as Master Sheet.
Mind you it's late and I've been awake since 5 AM so theere may be mistakes. I will proofread tomorrow when (hopefully) my head is less voggy.
Bit of a layout update has taken place here. I think it will be easier for you to navigate to each day and I KNOW it will be easier for me to edit. That one heckin'-long section was becoming a real booger to scroll through to clear off the oldest reports.
Happy Wednesday! Also happy Special Projects Day! You will now find new HD streaming webcams in the Mexico, Indonesia, Iceland, and Italy folders. Just look for the blue "New!". Santiaguito is a particularly lovely lively lavaly view.
The internet taketh away, and the internet giveth. We have a new webcam in Mexico pointed at the east flanks of Pico de Orizaba.
It is with a heavy heart and a frowny-face that I have moved the Stromboli webcam by Il Vulcano a Piedi to the extinct folder.
Well, you probably already noticed the section above. I have decided to get ambitious and start gathering up volcanic activity reports on my own instead of relying on secondhand reports from other sources. It may not be perfect and yeah it's work, but I want to do more than just round up webcams.
Now that I have mostly filled in a week's worth of reports, maintaining a daily schedule of checking various agencies' sites should be a little easier. Also it'll help keep me on top of what's-going-on around the world, and taking my leave of Facebook should give me more time to do that.
Oh..and I will be taking my leave of Facebook. Effective 20 January I will stop updating Volcano Earth there and concentrate my social media presence on BlueSky and YouTube.
I took advantage of a day of being snowed-in to publish my Alaska Seismometry Google Sheet over on my Sheets page.
Also in the webcams folder I had the sad task of clearing out yet more Icelandic streaming webcams that have stopped their work at least until the next eruption...and yes it seems a next eruption is coming possibly before March.
Well, you probably already noticed the site glow-up. Also I'm working on the Alaska data Sheet and my YouTube best-of page. I have tomorrow's Where-Am-I? in the can and ready to go HOWEVER it may be delayed by a few hours since I have a busy day ahead tomorrow. Oh, and happy New Year.
Also, the Telica webcam in Leon has been sent to the Extinct folder. I will update the VueMeister in the next day or so.
I'm about to archive this year's Where Am I? Challenge page and leaderboard and set up a new one for the 2025 season.
Also since it's the time of year in which we make resolutions that we then promptly neglect, here are my VE goals for the upcoming month(s).
1. Create a new Sheet for Alaskan volcano data similar to my Iceland one
2. Build a page featuring my best non-WhereAmI video content including playlists and timelapses.
3. Update this site's intro page. It's getting a bit dusty
4. Update this site's resources section. It too needs a revision.
5. Look into new widgets. I do miss the VolcanoCafe and VulcansCauldron widgets that inexplicably stopped working. I need to find a workaround.
6. Work on my social-media game. I'm going to focus on Bluesky and Facebook and attempt to put up more content than just DVP and WhereAmI.
7. (and this one's a biggie) Brace for the possibility of a temporary shutdown of Global Volcanism Program. I'm going to see just how far I can go in hosting the VoTW database in Google Docs.
Hawaiian Volcano Obervatory has moved their S2 webcam from the Upper ERZ over to the south rim of the summit caldera where the action is....and so I have moved that pin on the map and updated the webcam page link.
PS Happy Boxing Day.
GVP has updated their VoTW database with the newest eruptions, so I have updated any affected volcano pins. Also be sure to check out the new eruption at Kilauea.
Sorry about the lateness of the last few day's updates. I've been baking...a LOT. But now things are all caught up and I can start getting ready for a new year of Where Am I and DailyVolcamPics and whatnot.
Melanesia (Vanuatu) webcam images can once again be hotlinked. Also the 2024 WhereAmI? Challenge wrap-up is in the works.
In the Melanesia and Austraila folder, Vanuatu's monitoring site appears to be completely offline for now. I'll be checking regularly to see if/when/where it returns.
Something is going on with Alaska AVO's webcams. The images are updating but many of them are showing April or 4 for the month instead of December or 12. This began on some cameras earlier in the week but has spread to more. I'm fairly sure it's a problem with the program that generates the name in the image corner rather than their web page's code pulling up old images from the wrong libraries. I'll be keeping an eye on them to be certain though.
I have decided that as of 1 January 2025 I will stop posting content to Instagram and Threads and concentrate my social media presence on Bluesky, Facebook and YouTube.
In Alaska, AVO is on a roll! There are two new cameras, one for Akutan and one for Spurr.
Also be aware that in Melanesia, I can no longer hotlink webcam images. I've added a clickthrough image link and hopefully will soon have ones with an archived preview image instead of the generic ones.
In the Alaska folder, the Redoubt Low Light webcam has been revived from the realm of the Extinct.
I've added a second Google Sheets document to the Sheets page that includes all tremor histograms and drumplots for Iceland.
What with there being a new eruption in Iceland, I have gone ahead and did tomorrow's scheduled Iceland curations today. Several webcams have come back online. No, Live From Iceland hasn't returned and likely will not anytime soon.
In other sadder news we say goodbye to Yellowstone VO's only webcam. It has finally gone officially offline.
In addition to regular scheduled curation, I have updated the VueMeister both on this site and in my Google Drive download folder (I think I forgot to do that on the last update). Also I have updated my social media links down in the page footer.
I moved a few long-defunct webcams from the Mexico folder. Webcam Master Sheet is also updated to remove all extinct cameras. Over the next day or so I plan to update the VueMeister.
Iceland Live will be down for quite a while so I've gone ahead and moved those webcam pins to the Extinct folder.
For some inexplicable reason, the National Park Service webcams in the US & Canada folder have stopped working reliably. It appears to be a gateway error. Hopefully this will be sorted out soon.
(update) Problem with US NP webcams is resolved for now.
Sad to say goodbye (for now) to the Pelee webcam in the West Indies. Also it appears the Live From Iceland site's hiatus might be a bit more long-term.
Checking back in on Iceland it appears Live From Iceland's site is temporarily down and all their live videos on YouTube have been made private. I'll be keeping an eye on that. Meanwhile in Iceland, I have relinked three MBL livestreams.
I only just discovered that emsc-csem.org and British Geological Society no longer offer any KMZ products for Google Earth Pro. I have updated the Downloads & Resources page accordingly.
In Alaska there's a new view of Iliamna from the south. I also plan to double-check AVO's site for any additional surprises.
I have updated the Where Am I? Tours Archives to include last week's completed challenge as well as Season 1's challenges. Also I have updated the VueMeister to include recently added webcams.
Also I had not noticed that the formula for generating links to MAGMA Indonesia webcams was not working properly in the Webcam Master Sheet. I have found and fixed the issue and things should work properly again.
In the New Zealand folder there's a new view of Whakatane/White Island from the southeast at Te Kaha.
Alaska AVO's Wrangell WAZA webcam has wesumed working.....weally. The image is updating but that webcam does not yet appear in any links at AVO. I suppose it's a secret that only we are privy to.
I have added the 2nd season of tours to the Where Am I? Challenge Tours Archives. I hope to get the first season done by next week, though it may be challenging because I impetuously deleted a few of the tour paths from the first few challenges before I decided to make this a recurring thing.
Changing the update schedule AGAIN..this time pretty much back to how it was before. Turns out despite more webcams, I have found a way to quickly take care of checking in on the Indonesia webcams. Tuesdays now will be dedicated to more special projects, and when there are no more special projects to do, I'll have a day-off. YAY!
Meanwhile, special projects in the queue are:
Finish the Google Earth Tours archives for the first two seasons of Where Am I?
Check and curate all items in the Data folder
Build a Data master sheet similar to the one for webcams
Build a YouTube links page here for my webcam livestream playlists and other videos content.
I have updated the Webcam Master Sheet to include links to the Indonesia MAGMA Gallery. The links are dynamically generated through some craaazy spreadsheet alchemy and now a simple ten second update at my end will make sure you can jump right to the last ten days of any Indonesia volcano.
In the West Indies folder, Soufriere Guadeloupe is working again, but the image may be "stuck" on an earlier date. You may need to do a hard refresh to correct that. That's Ctrl (or Cmd on Mac) + Shift + R to force a new image to replace the stuck one.
This'un's a big'un. I have just finished the new Indonesia MAGMA Gallery update, so now there are 68 monitored volcanoes, each with at least one webcam..a few with multiple webcams....all on the VE map for your volcano-ogling pleasure. Be sure to check the "Read me first" pin (I think it's now buried in alphabetical order instead of at the top of the folder where it needs to be) for instructions on using the MAGMA Gallery.
And now that that's done, I am updating the update-schedule to give Indonesia its own day because it's a plate-full, especially when served up between Iceland and Japan. And since I can't make an eight-day week, I will just yeet webstream-link-check day and shuffle the rest around.
With that done, I can now get back to finishing up making the earlier seasons of Where Am I? into tours, THEN get on to checking the Indonesia Data folder for new additions.
In the South America folder there's a new view of Ollague. Also I plan on using this week's special-projects time to finish (or at least try to finish) the Indonesia gallery folder.
Y'all we're on a roll! Melanesia webcams are back online! TBH I'm not sure if they didn't come back online long before today, but I only just noticed after clearing temp-files and doing a hard page refresh (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + R). The link hasn't changed, but for me they had been stuck on 24 June 2024.
The NEW AND IMPROVED Indonesia folder is now live and online in my Google Earth KMZ file. Be sure to check out the READ-ME at the top of the placemarker list inside the Indonesia webcam gallery folder for more details on how to use MAGMA's image gallery.
I still need to update the Indonesia section of the VE Master Sheet, and sadly there's no way to include those images in the VueMeister.
Also the Indonesia folder is still a work-in-progress. I have more camera placemarkers to add as well as their corresponding volcanoes.
I have very temporarily removed the Indonesia webcams folder while I work on upgrading it to work with the MAGMA gallery. While there's no way to directly link to specific images or even pages, I think I have found a way to make it user-friendly and enjoyable. While the images are not as regularly updated throughout the day as the old CCTV webcam images, they represent quite a few more volcanoes and are of higher quality.
HVO has a new S2 webcam in the ERZ facing the new eruption of Kilauea at Nāpau crater. KMZ file, Master Sheet and VueMeister have all been updated.
In the South America folder I have moved A LOT of long-offline webcams into the Extinct folder and grayed them out on the Webcam Master Sheet. I plan on updating the VueMeister today to also reflect those changes.
The IPGP site and webcams have returned from the Land of 404.
STILL no sign of the MAGMA Indonesia Kamera (CCTV) images.
As of 2 days ago, all IPGP volcano observatory sites (Reunion Island and the French Caribbean volcanoes) have gone offline. Hopefully they will get that fixed soon.
I have now made the Where Am I? Challenge Tour Archives available as KML network like and KMZ file downloads available over on the Downloads & Resources page.
I have tested the tours out in GEP, GEW browser site and GEW mobile app. I have discovered that the mobile app further complicates things by not including player controls, not even a pause/play option. I suppose I best head on over to the GE community forum and do what a Volcanohead does best... grumble, rumble and raise heck about it.
I hope to eventually make a short video tutorial about how to use VE in GEW without the aid of a sledgehammer. I know it is an infuriating app.
I did it! I set and met a deadline! GO TEAM-ME! The Where Am I? Tours Archives for the 2024 season are now available at my Downloads page. I also made an update about it on the Where Am I? page.
Other seasons are in the works now.
Oh..and all the updates are up-to-date.
I have finished putting the 2024 season of Where Am I? tours into a KMZ file which I plan on uploading tomorrow after I make a space for it on my Where Am I? page. Over the coming week or so I hope to get the other 3 seasons uploaded also.
Farwell to Alaska's Wrangell VNGG webcam. However, there are other views of that volcano available in the Alaska FAA ashcams subfolder, which is part of the VE Data folder.
Check out the Iceland folder for several new views of the new lava.
Also the viewer will note that Indonesia's MAGMA webcams are still all offline or at least their pages that display them are.
This coming month on the BIG OL' LIST OF THINGS TO GET DONE I hope to get around to making a new KMZ file for all the past Where Am I? challenge tours. Likely that will be independent of the VE files just like the DailyVolcamPics KMZ.
Also on that list of special projects I plan on creating a video content page on this site that will feature links to each of my volcano playlists and perhaps a rotation of featured live webcams depending on which volcanoes are doing what they do best.
The Volcanoes folder has been updated to reflect the latest new-eruptions data from GVP as of 20 August 2024.
INGV-OE have changed the links to their webcams on Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano. I have updated those to the new URLs. I will hopefully get the updates to other INGV data over the next day or so if needed.
Apologies for the late update. I was a bit ill over the past few days but am better now and the updates have been updated. Note that Indonesia is still not working. Pages are now available but the images and links do not work.
There are two new webcams in the Mexico folder. They're both co-located in San Pablo Benito Juarez facing north toward Popocatepetl.
In less glad news, MAGMA Indonesia's site is still broken, but at least it isn't completely 500 Server Error at this time.
Usual updates are all complete except for the Indonesia folder. MAGMA is either having some 500 server error trouble or are doing site maintenance...or a bit of both. As soon as things come back online I will get that part of the update done.
Meanwhile, keep an eye on Iceland, the other eye on Hawaii, and an extra eye on Italy. It's Silly-Season and some volcanoes are being a little extra this month.
PS follow Volcano Earth on YouTube for all of my usual Vulcanalia fun and frolic. I hope to kick off the annual VolQueso film festival on the Ides of August
After a second crawl through the extinct folder, I found more resurrections. Check the Alaska folder for Aniakchak ANSL, the Hawaii folder for Kilauea S1, and the Mexico and Central America folder for Cerro Negro Leon.
Moved the Shishaldin ISLZ webcam back from the extinct-folder to the Alaska webcam folder. Also we have new links for some of the webcams in Iceland at Reykjanes. It's almost as if sone new lava might be expected there soon. Hmm.
I've completed updates and removed a few long-defunct webcams from the South America folder. Next special-project will be to check/update the volcanoes folder to reflect the latest VoTW database update.
In addition to regular updates for today and the updates I procrastinated about yesterday, I have also brought back two webcams from the "extinct" folder. One is at Cleveland in Alaska and the other is at Tolbachik on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
The Webcam Master Sheet and VueMeister have also been updated to include the revived webcams.
I'm a little behind on my update. I'll curate and update all streaming links tomorrow along with the regular update.
Also Team Katla...get ready. [*]
Team Yellowstone and Team Vesuvio, sitcho asses down!
[*] I make no promises nor prophecies. I am just the Volcano Whisperer. I cannot help that volcanoes tend to be hard-of-hearing.
After a 6-month hiatus, the Sumbing and Sundoro webcams in Indonesia are working again. Fortunately for folks living nearby, Sumbing and Sundoro volcanoes are remaining lazy.
Rainier's Sunrise Mtn webcam is back! Though it had been offline for more than 8 months I never sent it to the "extinct" folder because it is seasonal to-the-extreme. Enjoy that view while it lasts.
Also Happy Summer or Winter Solstice depending on where you are on this little blue ball, and happy Litha or Yule to those who celebrate.
I finally finished (I hope) updating the South America folder. I found new webcams in Chile and Colombia.
While I was at it, I also checked the latest new eruptions from GVP and updated the Volcanoes folder.
And yes, I didn't forget to update the VueMeister and the new Master Sheet.
Next on the Special Projects slate is to start checking the Data folder for dead and new links.
In addition to the regualar updates, I have begun the long and long-overdue crawl through the South America folders to update formatting, clear out defunct placemarkers, and hopefully find a few new views.
Well...it's a slow-go, but I've already turned up a few new webcams. I also made it a point to add them to the Webcam Master Sheet as well as the VueMeister.
Did I mention that there are a LOT of volcanoes in South America?
I'm still working on the South America update. Did I mention South America has A LOT of volcanoes? Once that region is done I probably will do the same for the Mediterranean.
Also I revised the Volcano Webcam Master Sheet to make it a little more readable.
Notable changes to the Indonesia folder. I removed another long inactive webcam's pin. Also I updated many more of the "click through" image previews so you'll see far less of the sad blue "No preview available" placeholders.
Also I am making my Imgur galleries private again. Sadly my volcainbow one seems to have gotten me negative attention and a content warning. :( I'm in arbitration with their admins because I don't believe I violated any ToS or community guidelines...but...meh.... why chance losing seven years worth of images. Back in the closet they go. :( Mind you this only hides them from the Imgur site's community and commentary. It does not mean that my linked images nor embedded galleries will vanish from public view.... so..... :)
This week's special project will likely be a long crawl through the various South American observatories' sites to see if any new webcams or data have become available.
I updated a ton of live stream links. Also I'm sorry to have neglected to update the VueMeister. I will get that done this evening.
In other news, though there's an eruption in Hawaii, there is not yet a webcam pointed at it. I've got my ears to the ground checking HVO's page regularly hoping for news of one though.
(update) VueMeister has been updated.
I finally made all of my Imgur galleries public. I had assumed for the longest time that I would no longer be able to add images to them once published, but it turns out that I can.
And speaking of galleries, I have added a new Imgur gallery to my #DailyVolcamPics page celebrating LGBTQIA pride and featuring volcainbows.
We have a new view of Marapi in the Indonesia folder. Also the Muir webcam upon Rainier is back, but I have decided to list its associated volcanoes as Adams and St. Helens since those are both fully in view.
I didn't get my scheduled #DVP update today done, but I got kinda sidetracked by alllllll the new lava in Iceland. So instead I spent the day making a little more sense and organization out of the Icelandic webcam folder.
Also my desktop computer was dedicated to recording a webcam time-lapse video of the first day of the new eruption. I hope to have that ready to share tomorrow after work.....after I get the scheduled and rescheduled updates updated.
Well...I beat my end-of-May deadline for the new project!
You'll see a new link in site navigation for Sheets. I have finally organized all of my webcam links into a single Google Sheets document. Now you have a bare-bones function-over-form tool for viewing any webcam even if you do not have Google Earth for desktop or web or are having trouble opening unsecured links in certain apps on your device.
Eventually I plan to expand the Sheets page to include a similarly formatted document with links to other data such as seismographs and GPS plots.
Cleared out MORE extinct webcams, but also added two new views of Piton de la Fournaise. I also am nearly done with the special project thing I mentioned a few days back.
Moved a few more webcams to the "extinct" folder because they have been non-working for more than 6 months.
In my last changelog post I mentioned a project. Well, it's about halfway complete now, and hopefully will prove useful and user-friendly to people who want all the volcanic eye-candy without having to learn the Google Earth UI.
In related news, while working on said mystery-project, I have done a little bit more extinct-webcam-culling and new-webcam-finding along the way. Look for a few new views in the Mediterranean, Indonesia, and Mexico/Central America.
AND while we're dreaming about future plans and planning future dreams, over the summer I hope to work out a way to integrate all of my past 170+ WhereAmI? flight paths and their corresponding videos into a new KMZ file.
FINALLY I finished my latest special project and have culled out a lot of nonworking webcams to the "extinct" folder as well as updated the VueMeister.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
I have embarked on what I hope will be yet another way to share my little virtual volcanic empire online. It's a work-in-progress, and I hope (though won't be so bold as to promise) that it will be complete and ready for the world by the end of May.
I cleared out a good few long-inoperational webcams from the South America folder, but on the brighter side, I have added a new volcano pin and two new cameras pointed at said volcano in the Indonesia folder. Go check out Ranakah.
This week I will make the most of the rainy poor-gardening weather and stay inside to update the VueMeister and cull out more inoperational webcams.
MAGMA Indonesia has been busy repairing or replacing webcams this past week because several have resumed operation. Be sure to
Also my special-projects-day intentions went out the window this past week, but I still intend to update the VueMeister and cull some more "extinct" webcams from both it and the KMZ files.
Also I need to find a new widget host. Apologies to VolcanoCafe and Cauldron of Vulcan for having to drop both widgets from this page for now.
Minor corrections in the Hawaii folder. I put Kilauea in the title of two of the new Mauna Loa webcams by mistake. This has been corrected in today's update.
Usual curation schedule completed, and I hope to spend tomorrow clearing out some more nonworking webcams to the Extinct folder as well as updating the VueMeister.
And as you have no-doubt discovered, I have put this changelog inside a collapsible group to keep pageload time to a minimum.
Added a new webcam in the Indonesia folder at Ruang, which is currently erupting spectacularly.
Also GVP has updated their volcano database and so now have I to reflect the most recent new eruptions at Atka (Alaska) and Ruang (Indonesia)
HVO has added 4 new webcams observing Kilauea and Mauna Loa as well as replaced the camera at M3 with a new higher-resolution one.
Check the Indonesia folder for a new view of Talang's summit from the south.
All the US National Parks webcams are back online....well, most of them except the ones that are seasonal.
Indonesia's Marapi POS webcam is back online after a long hiatus. Also Iceland's MBL has updated their YouTube channel custom URL and so I have updated my links, but you might need to check your bookmarks if you get a can't-find-it error on YouTube.
At least for now it appears all US National Park webcams are offline, including those at Yellowstone and Lassen Fortunately the ones at Volcanoes are operated by HVO and not the NPS. The YVO webcam at Yellowstone is also still working.
Regular updates are updating regularly, PLUS I have compl eted the overhaul of the Volcano Mars KMZ file. Now the text is a more digestible font, all volcano data balloons include an image with the volcano boundary outlined. Also since peak elevation is often ambiguous and contested data, I have done my best to "uncover the truth" or at the very least "report the most popular version of the truth", and this time I included footnotes to my sources. You may ask yourself "What is areoid? I wondered the same, but it turns out that it's just the Martian version of geoid, which is just the Earth-specific word for datum, and how the base "zero" for areoid is determined has apparently undergone subtle change in the past 20 years or so.
Anyhoo. Go see Mars before actual humans show up and wreck the place. My Volcano Mars KML and KMZ links are both available on my Downloads & Resources page, as well as a link to the Gazetteer's complete placemarker KML file for all Martian land features.
Regular scheduled update is done, PLUS I have spent today working on Volcano Mars, reformatting text and adding improved images that include feature boundaries. I need to do one last data check before uploading the new version. After that, I will begin adding any new feature or subfeature placemarkers as needed. In related news, I will also try to make some new progress on a similar product about Io.
Sorry, Venus. You will have to wait your turn.
I've added four new streaming webcams to the Mexico folder, two of which are excellent closeup views of Popocatépetl's summit.
Moved a few long-defunct-camera pins from the Alaska and Hawaii folders to the Extinct folder. Also take a peek in the Mediterranean folder for a new streaming webcam at Vesuvius.
It's not a scheduled curating, but I went ahead and updated a few Webcams de Mexico streaming camera links that came back online today.
CENAPRED Mexican webcams are back online, but now we need Webcams de Mexico to update all of their live streams.
MEANWHILE in the Hawaii folder I've added a streaming webcam at Kilauea V1. Also as part of curating all live stream links I have also culled out my YouTube LavaTube playlists of all discontinued streams.
Looks like Mexico's CENAPRED's site is down.
Also happy Easter to those who are celebrating today. 🐰
In addition to the usual updates, I dug through the "Extinct" folder and found a few webcams that had resumed working. They have been returned to their proper folders now.
So be sure to look for Yasur cam in the Melanesia folder, Soufriere Guadeloupe in the West Indies folder, and Momotombo power plant in the Mexico and Central America folder.
Mainly updated Indonesia, moving a few long-dormant webcam placemarkers to the "Extinct" folder.
#DVP files updated. Also I'm slightly changing the update schedules for Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Updated webcam links in Iceland, Mexico and the Med.
I have updated the volcano placemarker data to include any new and ongoing eruptions for 2024 as of GVP's most recent database update.
I've added a new folder for Philippines and SE Asia. So far there is only one streaming webcam pointed at Mayon, but it is a fine view. Updates for that folder will take place on Mondays.
Also on my agenda for special projects this week I hope to review and, if needed, revise volcano information placemarkers with the latest eruption data.
Going forward, I will only change the "Updated dd/mm/yyyy" titles on individual folders within my KMZ file if anything within that folder actually changed. If there are no changes that day, I will still upload a fresh version of the KMZ file with the date updated in the main header folder for the benefit of anyone downloading for the first time as well as assuring network link users that the netlink is still working AND that Yours-Truly is still hard at work.
Also I've streamlined the widgets on this page. Volcano Discovery's map may still be found in the KMZ file right at the top, AND of course you can visit them online.
Today's update includes several new streaming webcams around the Reykjanes eruption.
For the benefit of anyone who is using a downloaded copy of my KMZ file, I will be including an attention-getter (❗) next to any updates that include additions or removals of placemarkers or significant restructuring of folders. That way those users will know when the best times are to re-download the KMZ. I will also save more entries in this Site News column to keep a more thorough changelog of the KMZ as well as this web site.
Check back here for important updates, or follow Volcano Earth on social media.
*making mental note to add SM links to all page footers*
I'm moving ahead with the move away from MyMaps and back to Google Earth Web. I have more details over at my Volcano Earth for Google Earth Web page.
Be sure to visit my Iceland Webcams to see the eruption as well as a few new webcams around the area.
In other news, I have updated my YouTube channel by dividing out the LavaTube streaming playlist so that there are now multiple lists sorted by volcano.
Finally, I have checked back in on Google Earth Web and they have done more revisions to the app that make it much more useful, especially for mobile users. I will continue to use MyMaps for now, but will be testing GEW extensively. It appears that the app can now properly open and display the same KMZ source files that Google Earth Pro for desktop uses. I just need to be sure it works for most devices before abandoning good ol' stalwart MyMaps.
ICELAND ICELAND ICELAND! I know you all are just waiting for something to happen...but (as of just now) it has not. However, that did not stop the spring volcam-planting season from going ahead. There are several new ones in and around the something's-gonna-happen zone. If the last eruption is any indication of how the next eruption will be, you will want to check in often because it may be a short event. For the sake of the folks of Grindavik, a small and polite eruption would be ideal.
Regular updates are updated....AND I have good news! The long LONG dormant L.A.V.E.Etna-camera at Schiena dell'Asino has resumed operation!
