VMware Server 2 runs on several server-class host operating systems,[4]including different versions of Microsoft Windows Server 2000, 2003, and 2008, and mainly enterprise-class Linuxes. The manual explicitly states: "you must use a Windows server operating system". The product also runs on Windows 7 Enterprise Edition.

Server 2 uses a web-based user-interface, the "VMware Infrastructure Web Access", instead of a GUI. For web interfaces, VMware Server 2 and VMware vCenter 4 use the Tomcat 6 web server, while VMware vCenter 2.5 is based on Tomcat 2.5.

VMware server 2 supports the Microsoft Shadow Copy service. (Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 also supports Shadow Copy.) Virtual machines that support this service can be backed up without stopping.

Allocate and optimize resources for maximum efficiency with our server management software. Manage up to 70,000 virtual machines and 5,000 hosts across 15 vCenter instances. Use vSphere HA and DRS clusters to support up to 64 hosts and 8,000 virtual machines. Replicate roles, permissions, and licenses across the infrastructure so you can simultaneously log in, view, and search the inventories of all vCenter Servers. Link multiple vCenter Server Appliances and increase visibility without using costly load balancers.

vSphere Client Plug-ins from VMware partners allow IT admins to manage third-party elements in their data center directly from vCenter. Our server management software has the largest partner ecosystem in the industry, with our open vSphere Client Plug-in SDK. As a result, vCenter customers can implement back-up, data protection, server management, network management and security management, directly from vCenter.

VMware launched the vSphere Client Plug-in Certification Program in 2016 to ensure a better end-user experience for customers. Certified Plug-ins deliver optimal performance, better security model, client isolation against failures in one plug-in, and enhanced vCenter Server Appliance scalability. Customers will be able to distinguish certified vSphere Client Plug-ins because only certified Plug-ins will carry the "VMware-ready" logo.

Hello Gurus - I have a test environment vmware host that i have a few windows server 2008 R2 on. I did a in place upgrade on one from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 Datacenter that worked fine. Now i have a microsoft web server 2008 r2 that I am doing the same thing as well. This time i go thru the upgrade steps then it reboots to the 2012 Windows icon with the dots spinning below it. It does that for about a minute or two then I get the "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you." message. Then it reboots to the same screen and does the same thing again. I looked online but there is so many different answers to this and i hate to have to rebuild a 2012 web server and migrate everything over. I have reverted the upgrade back to a vm snapshot i took before the upgrade. My vmware tools is up to date and i have checked on the microsoft technet but it seems to that it could be on the vm side. Im not sure because i was able to do a in place upgrade on one machine fine until i got to this one. Any help or direction i should take on this? Thanks!!

I have a power edge set up with VMworkstation, I have 3 server 2003's (a file, a dns, and a dhcp) and a server 2008(with i want to be PDC w/ AD), also i have 1 XP and 1 win7. the servers can ping each other but I can not ping the clients? I have turned off the firewalls on both XP and win7. Before I start getting roles installed I wanted to simply ping to make sure they all communicate. I used a made up ip of 10.10.10.11 for 2003 (10.10.10.9 for dns) ect. Just wondering why I cannot ping the clients. reading other post they state firewall. I am sure I have disabled them. Note: this is not on a network or internet at this time.

I found that using the custom vmnet0 (auto bridging) worked. I am trying to get more hands-on with AD and DC's I had it on Bridged on friday and I could ping server to server, but not the clients (Xp and win7)

With over 20 years of partnership and thousands of joint customers, Dell and VMware offer a collaborative, solution-based approach to simplify your hybrid cloud. Wherever you are in your transformation journey, PowerEdge servers and VMware make it easier to deploy the software-defined data center (SDDC) and hybrid cloud solutions that reduce IT complexity, improve operational efficiency, increase developer agility and empower your business.

Now I have a server with the restored SQL installation and the empty drives. Only problem is that the SQL server is deprecated. When trying to do a SQL system database restore from Commvault, I would get the message, that the SQL server is not running, which is correct, as it cannot start without the system databases.

My only problem is that I have 600+ SQL servers running that I need to protect, and most of them are configured differently, so I hoped that there was a easier way to handle the restore of a Vmware SQL server :-)

When the vCenter Servers for Windows are upgraded and migrated to the VCSA, the migration process preserves the FQDN of the older Windows Server as it stands up the newly deployed vCenter Server appliance with the same name. Before and after migration, customers struggle with the requirement of updating FQDN and hostnames for the new vCenter Server as it is no longer a Windows Server and should follow different naming standards per operating system type. Changing the FQDN of the vCenter Server can also be helpful to support mergers & acquisitions where server naming conventions may differ between firms.

By default, Azure Backup Server communicates with VMware servers over HTTPS. To set up the HTTPS connection, download the VMware Certificate Authority (CA) certificate, and import it on the Azure Backup Server.

On Add Credential, enter a name and a description for the new credential, and specify the username and password you defined on the VMware server. The name, Contoso Vcenter credential is used to identify the credential in this procedure. If the VMware server and Azure Backup Server aren't in the same domain, specify the domain in the user name.

On Select Computers, under Server Name/IP Address, specify the FQDN or IP address of the VMware server. If all the ESXi servers are managed by the same vCenter, specify the vCenter name. Otherwise, add the ESXi host.

Before running this command, stop the DPMRA service on the MABS server. Otherwise, the script returns success, but doesn't update the exclusion list. Ensure there are no jobs in progress before stopping the service.

This cmdlet establishes a connection to a vCenter Server system. The cmdlet starts a new session or re-establishes a previous session with a vCenter Server system using the specified parameters. When you attempt to connect to a server, the server checks for valid certificates. To set the default behavior of VMware PowerCLI when no valid certificates are recognized, use the InvalidCertificateAction parameter of the Set-PowerCLIConfiguration cmdlet. For more information about invalid certificates, run 'Get-Help about_invalid_certificates'.You can have more than one connection to the same server. To disconnect from a server, you need to close all active connections to this server. VMware PowerCLI supports working with multiple default servers. If you select this option, every time when you connect to a different server by using the Connect-VIServer cmdlet, the new server connection is stored in an array variable together with the previously connected servers, unless the NotDefault parameter is set. This variable is named $DefaultVIServers and its initial value is an empty array. When you run a cmdlet and the target servers cannot be determined from the specified parameters, the cmdlet runs against all servers stored in the array variable. To remove a server from the $DefaultVIServers variable, you can either use the Disconnect-Server cmdlet to close all active connections to the server, or modify the value of $DefaultVIServers manually. If you choose to work with a single default server, when you run a cmdlet and the target servers cannot be determined from the specified parameters, the cmdlet runs against the last connected server. This server is stored in the $defaultVIServer variable, which is updated every time you establish a new connection. To switch between single and multiple default servers working mode, use the DefaultServerMode parameter of the Set-PowerCLIConfiguration cmdlet. Working with multiple default servers will be enabled by default in a future release.

Connects by using a server session ID. Once you connect to a server, you can save the session ID - $serverObject.SessionId, so that you can restore the existing server connection instead of reconnecting. 2351a5e196
