Science has great potential to benefit society, but this potential comes with risks as well. Directed at introductory level social science and humanities majors, this textbook teaches the rules and limits of social science methods. Reisner starts from the assumption that it is not necessary to be able to do research to read and judge the soundness of research publications. The chapters guide students through an explicit set of rules for reading research articles developed from three common research methods: content analysis, survey research, and experimental method.

A collection of Open textbooks are textbooks that have been funded, published, and licensed to be freely used, adapted, and distributed.These books can be downloaded for no cost, or printed at low cost. All textbooks are either used at multiple higher education institutions; or affiliated with an institution, scholarly society, or professional organization. The library currently includes 631 textbooks, with more being added all the time.

OTN supports the Open Textbook Library, which provides a growing catalog of free, peer-reviewed and openly licensed textbooks. The network now encompasses more than 40 universities and colleges from around the country, including University of Washington, Oregon State University and Portland State University in the Pacific Northwest.

As a network member, WSU will work with the OTN team to plan and promote on-campus workshops on adopting open textbooks; gather and report open textbook adoption numbers and measure impact; and contribute ideas and expertise to shape the future of OTN.

Moderated by David Ernst, University of Minnesota, and Merinda McLure, Colorado State University, the interactive workshop is sponsored by WSU Libraries. Open Pedagogy grants are designed to support innovative teaching and learning. Open Pedagogy incorporates Open Educational Resources (OER) and assignments to enhance the learning environment in which students actively contribute to open knowledge.

Redesign your course to incorporate an open textbook. The textbook can be adopted as-is or remixed (rearranged, edited, or combined with other materials) to better fit class topics and presentation order. The textbook must be the required textbook -OR- there must be no required textbook. Awardees agree to use free or low-cost resources for at least three semesters and present briefly on their experiences with the program.

Choose at least one open textbook for two or more classes and adopt it/them as the assigned textbook(s) for the classes within one calendar year. This can include adapting open textbooks to better fit class topics and presentation order. The textbook(s) must be the required textbook(s) for each class OR there must be no required textbook(s) for those classes. The successful application will include at least two instructors and at least two courses.
