I am Associate Researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. (SonyCSL) in Tokyo, Japan. My research explores the interaction between human and AI with a focus on music via representations in neuroscientific, physiological, and behavioural data. I lead a team developing and applying machine learning techiniques towards understanding the cognitive and neurophysiological mechanisms supporting music preference, as well as building human-centered AI models in music information retrieval.
Previously, I was Project Researcher at the Music Dynaformics Lab of Sony CSL, and postdoctoral fellow at the Music & Culture Technology Lab of the Institute of Information Science at Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan. There, I developed an interactive system that generates violin fingerings from the score and learns in a semi-supervised manner based on the variational autoencoder.
I completed my doctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany. My research examined the neural and cognitive basis of predictions in Western tonal harmony by combining computational modelling with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and behavioural methods.
Before moving to Leipzig, I pursed a masters in computational neuroscience at the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience (BCCN) in Berlin, Germany, and an undergraduate masters degree in mathematics at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK.
I was born and raised in Hong Kong.
