I created this lesson for EL kindergarten students in a study on the seasons. In this standard, the teacher should provide the support that promotes learning when a concept or skill is first introduced. I used realia for this lesson, bringing in a rake and leaves to demonstrate the need to rake leaves in the autumn. I brought gloves and a hat for winter. The umbrella is for spring, and the beach ball is for summer.
By giving the students hands-on materials to touch and consider, they were better able to make the connection from real life to the classroom. Realia give students an opportunity to interact with the content. Students get excited to learn when visuals are provided to help them understand and make connections.
In this lesson, I taught the lesson of seasons using many visuals and real objects. Working with ELL students, I understand that my students benefit from using visuals as it helps them to make the connections between what they see and what they learn. Using visuals in this lesson was a big support for all my students. it gets my students excited and motivated to learn new topics. They feel comfortable learning the materials without the frustration of learning a new language.

As an EL teacher, I created this bilingual word wall for my ELL students as most of them speak Arabic to help my students in this learning the English language. I understand the relationship among language acquisition (first and second), literacy development. and acquisition of academic content and skills. Students sometimes use the bilingual word wall to help them remember some words in English using their first language and the words in the word wall. Students also could look at the pictures that are included in the word wall as a guide for them and support them to learn the English language.
This word wall that I created, and I have it in my room, gets all my ELL students' attention and they ask about different languages. It gets students excited about learning languages and it helps my newcomer students to learn English.
