Hello! My name is Vivian Arceo, and I am a college graduate who majored in Communication with a focus in Entrepreneurship. As a first-generation student I found it necessary to get involved and make an impact with a purpose--whether that was through my work as a peer advisor for Santa Clara University's Communication Department, a student leader for organizations on campus like Hermanas Unidas or Camp Kesem, or my engagement in the classroom. Like others in my graduating class, our journey had been shaped by our tenacity and commitment to creating change. We were asked to adjust our expectations of college as we switched to an online format through a pandemic, uplift others and create more inclusive spaces in times of social injustice, and be competent, compassionate and conscious as within and beyond Santa Clara University.
My E-Portfolio is not only representative of what it means to be a Communication major, but also offers insight as to who I am and how I've grown in my time at Santa Clara. To grant perspective, as I furthered development in my relationships, academically, and professionally I have selected a number of artifacts from various courses that connect to themes of storytelling and representation. All of my artifacts--including films, reports, research, and campaigns--stem from the following Program Learning Outcomes established by the Communication Department:
PLO #3: Analyze how communication structures that maintain power and privilege and engage in practices that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
PLO #5: Demonstrate research skills including the ability to formulate research questions, interpret, and evaluate communication research.
PLO 6: Creative effective and ethical oral, visual and written communication based on awareness of diverse perspectives, contexts, and social identities.
I felt that these three PLO's played a key role shaping my work both within and outside the department. In order for me to make space for diverse perspectives and give a voice to meaningful stories audiences can find themselves connecting to, I had to be able to understand the communities I was working with by researching and asking their needs and I needed to understand the current structures of communication that are either uplifting communities or creating barriers. Only then, after I have done so, will I be able to maintain relationships and commit to creating effective and ethical projects fit for everyone.
