Communication structures understanding power, privilege, & DEI
COMM 145: The Business of Media
For the Business of Media course, I had to interpret the past five years (2019-2023) of film and television, and determine the state of Paramount Global within the entertainment industry. Diving into the Motion Picture Associations' theme reports, I had to analyze patterns of across the years of what trends tended to discover success and which ones fell short.
I evaluated trade resources that helped clarify Paramount Global's accomplishments and downfalls over the years. Drawing on how the company compared to its competitors in viewership and box office profits, I developed my own interpretation as to why the company was less successful and offered an analysis as to what areas Paramount could improve if they want to grow their profits and status within the industry.
Based on the Industrialization of Culture Framework (ICF), the concept presumes that success is defined based on the culture of the time and setting and is shaped by changes in technology, regulations within the industry, and practices executed by those who have the ability to make an impact. Under PLO 3, we can see how businesses have the power to make decisions about who is represented on screen based on how the industry defines what will be successful, and on the other side, we see the power shift to consumers and advertisers when they decide which companies are worth investing in.
COMM 135: Editing
Created for our upper division Editing course, my partner, Sarah Schulist and I were responsible for creating a short documentary using footage accessible to students from the documentary, Built for Life.
Throughout the class, I learned how editing plays a powerful role in how an audience is able to connect with a story, how a narrative and character study can be shaped based on the the techniques and films you choose to incorporate in your film, and how choices made by a creative affect the perspective, tone, and theme for the film. In our short documentary, Sarah and I wanted to offer the audience a glimpse into a different world away from the fast-pace modern world we've grown accustomed to focusing on Vince McIntyre.
In our short documentary, Sarah and I wanted to offer the audience a glimpse into a different world away from the fast-pace modern world we've grown accustomed to focusing on Vince McIntyre. This artifact resonates with PLO #3 as we used editing techniques and tools to show how despite living a different way of life, all strive to live authentically and with purpose through our work and the connections we form. By learning about setting tone through music, drawing parallels between shots and narration, and building a serene and soothing pace, Sarah and I were able to bring the audience into a different environment that still is relevant and meaningful to them.
