Hi, I am Brooklynn Bycott, a Doctoral Occupational Therapy student at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, Dallas, TX campus. Before beginning my studies at St. Augustine, I attended Texas Tech University. I graduated in the spring of 2022 with a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and a minor in Psychology.
Through personal experiences with occupational therapy in my family and my academic learning, I developed a passion for vision and neurorehabilitation. Initially, I was unsure how to combine these interests into a cohesive capstone project. However, during my literature review, I discovered a significant gap in formal training on vision rehabilitation for occupational therapists in graduate programs. This is concerning because vision deficits are common after traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), yet they are often overlooked and not prioritized in treatment. Additionally, I found evidence of increased caregiver stress due to a lack of understanding of the condition.
These findings inspired the creation of this website, which aims to enhance occupational independence and quality of life for individuals with TBIs and visual deficits, as well as their caregivers. The website provides occupational therapists with tools and resources to help their patients achieve meaningful goals. By doing so, I aim to empower therapists with greater confidence in their knowledge and abilities to deliver effective, evidence-based interventions.
This project would not have been possible without my Capstone Team. Thank you for your support and dedication!
