Why Power Electronics?

Power electronics deals with the efficient conversion, control and conditioning of electric power. Some of the reasons that motivate me to pursue research in power electronics are the following.

Innumerous real-world applications - Power electronics is all around you - whether it be the charger for your cell-phone that deals with tens of watts or the inverter that drives the motor of your electric car that deals with tens or hundreds of kilo-watts! Any device that is powered by electricity involves some form of power conversion or power management. Power conversion systems have revolutionized the way we live and work.

Diverse and challenging - Since the spectrum of power electronics ranges from a few watts to a few megawatts, with converters designed to operate from a few volts to tens of kilo-volts, power electronics engineers deal with a wide variety of challenges. In order to gain some level of mastery over this field, one must be equipped with a wide array of skill-sets.

Power electronics engineers deal with   (1) circuit theory (2) analog and digital electronics (3) electromagnetics and magnetic materials (4) power semiconductor devices (5) control systems (6) thermal management (7) insulation systems, and the like while building a practical power converter.

Impact - Most countries in the world have resolved to take transformative steps to achieve sustainability. Innovations in the energy sector have been identified as one of the priorities to achieve sustainable development on a global scale. A career in power electronics enables you to work with sustainable technologies such as renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and smart buildings.
