If you believe someone is suffering from any of the conditions listed below it is imperative to call 911 as soon as possible before attempting to intervene.
COVID-19 is known to cause strain on the heart and lungs of individuals with pre-existing conditions, increasing the chance of cardiac arrest. CPR is an emergency technique that has the potential to resuscitate the heart when it has stopped beating.
During this time it is important to note that while performing CPR on an individual with COVID-19, it is important to use a CPR mask as a breathing barrier as shown above while providing breaths to prevent viral transmission.
COVID-19 has been linked to an increased risk of blood clot formation that may progress to strokes. It is important to be able to recognize the signs of a stroke, as responding in a timely manner may save a life. F.A.S.T is a helpful mnemonic used by the American Stroke Association to help remember key features of a stroke.
COVID-19 can cause insult to the lung tissue, especially in those with pre-existing lung disease. This can cause a sudden accumulation of fluid in the lungs, rapidly decreasing their ability to transport oxygen into the blood. It is important to be able to recognize these signs in yourself and/or others.
Labored and Rapid Breathing
Discolored Skin and Nails
Low Blood Pressure
Headaches
Fast Pulse
Mental Confusion
It is vitally important to call 911 if you suspect someone is suffering from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. This is often a very serious life-threatening complication requiring immediate medical attention.
