Panelists in the panel discussion on
job opportunities for mathematics students in industry and academia
The purpose of this panel discussion is to inform the bachelors, masters and doctoral students about job opportunities in academia and industries. The panelists will make short presentations about these matters and these will be followed by a question-answer session. The panelists are academicians and industry professionals and some with a mix of both. Sometime during the master’s degree, most students make up their minds whether they wish to go for higher studies or for a job in the industry. Mathematicians are nowadays preferred by many industries such as insurance, government, banking, finance and software. A large number of IITs, IISERs, and universities have been opened during the last decade which has created a huge number of vacancies in academics. The panelists will speak about the skills which the students must acquire to prepare them for the path they wish to tread after they graduate with a masters degree.

Panelists in the panel discussion on
Educational challenges in undergraduate mathematics
Undergraduate instructors in different mathematics programmes across the country face some common questions and difficulties. What are the expectations with which students join maths programmes in college, and how do these differ from the demands of our programmes? How can the transition from school to college be eased? How does one ensure learning in large classes? What practices inside and outside the classroom are effective when working with a group of students from different social and academic backgrounds? What types of curricula and course materials help expose students to and prepare them for different career options?
The panelists are Prof. V. V. Acharya, Prof. Amber Habib, Prof. Geetha Venkataraman, and Prof. Fozia Qazi. They bring their rich and varied experiences from within undergraduate classrooms, as well as insights from designing programmes and curricula, and writing and speaking extensively on mathematics education.

Panelists in the panel discussion on
Public understanding of Mathematics & Mathematicians' understanding of society
Mathematics as a discipline essentially concerns itself with abstractions, which may or may not be directly inspired by 'real life applications'. Yet the process of doing mathematics is a very social practice and is deeply embedded in society. In this panel discussion, we foreground some of the ways in which mathematics interacts with society: Why is public understanding of mathematics relevant, especially in the context of COVID-19? What does it mean to 'do mathematics' in our social context? How do we understand various concerns about representation and gender in the mathematics community? Can we make mathematics socially relevant, given India's social context? And can mathematics shed any insights on society and social processes?
The panelists are Prof. Om Damani, Prof. Neeraja Sahasrabuddhe, Prof. Anand Sahasranaman, and Prof. Tathagata Sengupta. They bring valuable insights from their varied rich experience in multiple distinct aspects of the broad theme on mathematics and society.
