My Background
My Background
My name is Jonathan Twining and I am a retired Emeritus Professor of Biology from Eastern Nazarene College, where I taught the ecology and environmental science courses for 22 years. Before that I worked for various environmental consulting companies as a project manager and environmental scientist. I have an MS in Oceanography from Old Dominion University and an MEd from Eastern Nazarene College. My research interests include herpetology, snakebite prevention, human-animal conflicts, vernal pool ecology, and amphibian bioacoustics. I have experience working on environmental projects with people in a number of countries, including Romania, Costa Rica, Haiti, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, and Malawi. I have had five papers published in peer reviewed journals on the vocalizations of frogs from Costa Rica. I have also created a 130-page training manual and a variety of other educational materials on snakebite prevention that are available to download online for free. In addition, I have a variety of experience with community-based projects including the assessment of ponds and salt marshes for the City of Quincy, MA, as well as vernal pool certification for the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation. I also prepared a conservation management plan for the Town of Smithfield Land Trust regarding the Wolf Hill Forest Preserve when I was a member. In my "free" time, I enjoy landscape photography and creating video content. I have a YouTube channel called "OneBiotaNetwork"..
Who I Am and What I Believe
I am a follower of Jesus Christ. I want my actions, and not just my words, to reflect this truth.
While I believe that it is only through Jesus that we can receive forgiveness from God and enter heaven, I also respect that others may believe differently; I will seek to work together with them for our common goals and will hope that we can have respectful discourse about our beliefs in the process.
I try my very best to live by this code: treat others the way you want to be treated. Similarly, I believe the greatest commandments are to love God and love your neighbor. In the context of what we know today, I believe our neighbors are both human and non-human (plants, animals, etc.)
I want to live out Micah 6:8 - act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. I also want to walk with integrity and honesty.
I believe in the power of prayer, and that I need to act in faith, believing that God will do what he says he will do.
I believe that we were designed to have healthy relationships with God, each other, and the rest of the planet, as well as our own minds and bodies.
I believe that all life is precious to God and therefore it is precious to me. I therefore seek to conserve and preserve life to the greatest extent possible, while also recognizing that life must be taken to support life, and all that we take from life must be given back.
I believe that both humans and other forms of life have been given the freedom to be fruitful and multiply, and to interact together in such a way that all life can be sustained.
I believe we need to leave the planet better than we found it, and should never take more than we are willing to give back to the earth.
I am human and sometimes I fall short of these ideals. But I serve my Heavenly Father who loves me and is merciful and compassionate to me. I am thankful for his undeserved grace.
