I am a Ph.D. economist trained in general equilibrium theory and public policies. I currently work for a professional tax services firm.
As an economist, I know that carbon tax is a great solution for us, but politics seems to be bringing us in the other direction. Inspired by the EU's carbon border adjustment, I decided to introduce carbon tax at least to my personal decision. That is, the virtual carbon pricing (VCP).
In today's world, many transportation industry websites (both flight and ground) as well as online shopping platforms provide information on carbon emissions for each product and service. However, interpreting the metric tons of carbon equivalent emissions can be confusing. When choosing between two products or services, one option might be cheaper but emit more CO2 equivalent than the other.
To address this, I use the concept of virtual carbon pricing. I assign a price to emissions at a rate I am committed to and make decisions as if I had to pay that amount in carbon tax. This helps me make more environmentally conscious choices.
Currently, virtual carbon pricing requires significant mental calculations and imagination. To simplify this process, I plan to develop applications for households and enterprises. If you know of any technology that could be useful for virtual carbon pricing, please let me know. I am also open to other forms of collaboration. Feel free to contact me if you are interested.
