A watershed is an area of land that encompasses different rivers and streams that eventually flow into one body of water. Everyone lives in a watershed, even if you don’t live right next to a river. The Virtual Canoe Race takes a deep dive into watershed science by focusing on the Delaware River Watershed.
An estuary is the place where a river meets the sea. The Delaware Estuary stretches 134 miles from the Trenton falls to the mouth of the Delaware Bay between Cape May, New Jersey, and Cape Henlopen, Delaware. The landscape of the Estuary is marked primarily by flat lands with low elevations and few steep slopes.
Headwaters are the beginning, or source, of a river.

A flood plain is an area of land adjacent to a stream or river which stretches from the banks of its channel to the base of the enclosing valley walls, and which experiences flooding during periods of high discharge.
A riparian buffer or stream buffer is a vegetated area near a stream, usually forested, which helps shade and partially protect the stream from the impact of adjacent land uses.

Stormwater runoff is rain or melting snow that flows over the ground. In urban or developed areas, stormwater runs over pavement and parking lots, picking up oil and other pollutants before flowing into a nearby river or stream. In more natural areas including forests and wetlands, stormwater can soak into the ground, or be stored and filtered.
