Participating is easy!

Check out the three simple steps below:

Identify a tree in your yard, neighborhood, school, favorite park or anywhere else you love to visit.
Already know a tree in your yard? Move on to Step 2.
Create a tree tag featuring tree characteristics and the awesome benefits your tree provides!
Scan or take a picture of your sign and upload it to our site.

The goal of this event is to bring awareness to the value of urban forests in Pinellas County while celebrating National Arbor Day!

Eligibility

  • Elementary-aged Youth (5-10 years old) in Pinellas County*

  • Middle-school-aged Youth (11-13 years old) in Pinellas County*

  • High school-aged Youth (14-18 years old) in Pinellas County*

*Youth outside of Pinellas County can still participate, but will not be judged in award submissions

Award Categories

The following will be awarded in each age-group (see Eligibility):

  • Artistic Award - This award will be given to the sign with the most creativity.

  • Abundance Award - This award will be given to the participant who submits the most signs.

  • Facebook Fan Favorite - This award will be given to the participant who receives the most likes for their sign on our Facebook page.

Note: All awards will be judged on overall appearance, attention to detail and accuracy of information (See Judging Criteria below).

Judging Criteria

Signs must include the following:

  • Image, drawing, rubbing, etc. of overall tree, tree leaves, and tree bark

  • Common and scientific name of the tree*

  • Diameter at breast height (DBH) measurement (see Step 2)

  • Calculation results from National Tree Benefits Calculator (see Step 2)

  • At least one additional fact about your tree

*If you explore all three options for trying to identify your tree, but are still unable to determine the tree species you have, try to narrow it down (i.e. oak tree, pine tree, etc.) You can get creative with the name if you are unable to identify.

Scoring Rubric

  • Overall appearance (clean, clear, understandable) - 25 points

  • Attention to detail (spelling; all required information is included) - 50 points

    • At a minimum, signs must include the "Overall benefit of $_____ every year" (from National Tree Benefits Calculator)

      • Additional details from the storm water, property value, energy, air quality and CO2 tabs from the online calculator will be awarded more points.

  • Creativity (unique elements such as images, drawings, textures, and colors) - 25 points


Award Details

Award winners will be announced on National Arbor Day, April 30, 2021.

Winners will get a copy of their sign printed and will be on display at a local park. Winning signs will also be showcased on the website and social media accounts (if permitted).
