About School Counselors
What do school counselors do?
According to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA, 2019), the role of the professional school counselor is to determine the needs of students and intervene to address them in the areas of academic development, social-emotional learning, and college and career readiness.
What is equity in education?
As diversity among students continues to grow, the role of educators must adjust to meet their needs. Regardless of socioeconomic status, race, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or immigration status, all students deserve a high-quality education. For this reason, educators must realize that equity in education does not mean that all students get the same, but rather, that all students get what they need.
How do school counselors ensure equity in education for their students?
According to the ASCA National Model (2019), using student data, school counselors must identify factors among their students that leave them vulnerable to opportunity gaps. Opportunity gaps lead to achievement gaps that can be closed suing research-based data-driven techniques.
What techniques do school counselors use to close opportunity and achievement gaps for students?
One of the most effective methods to meeting the diverse needs of all students is with the implementation of a multi-tiered system of student support. In this system, school counselors provide interventions based on student need. The first tier contains interventions to be delivered to all students. The second tier contains interventions aimed at groups of students with similar needs. The third, and final tier provides interventions for individual students with specific needs. To use the multi-tiered student system of support as an intervention tool aimed at equity, school counselors must incorporate all tiers into their counseling program.
