Trouble at the Airport: Example Storyline for VR Training

  1. It is 8 am, and Amy is ready to embark on a day. In order to get up, she pushes herself up using the desk next to her bed, and on to her wheelchair.

  2. She then rolls to the bathroom to get ready. She has to push herself up and has to balance at the sink for about 10 minutes.

  3. Amy then rolls to her closet and decides to pick an outfit. She has to keep up her balance while she struggles to put new pants on. In addition, she is limited to wearing slip on shoes.

  4. By this time, it is 8:20 am, and Amy has still not had breakfast. She is unable to reach the cabinets, so her daughter has to help her get the bred. She settles for a simple food because it would take her too long to make anything else.

  5. Amy needs to roll out of her home to get to her car. She uses a ramp to get onto her car which has a greater space than a regular car in order for her chair to fit. She also uses a hand lever that acts as a pedal.

  6. When she gets to the airport, she is forced to have to get off of her chair and onto a small, airport loaner wheelchair. She is immediately thrown off because the crew workers address her daughter, who is pushing her chair, to ask if she will need assistance pushing Amy. She made her feel as if she wasn’t there.

  7. As Amy is transferred to the airplane terminal, she is the first to board. She feels the eyes of everyone glued on her as she is transferred to a tiny aisle chair and helped to her seat. Just as she gets to her seat, two airplane workers pick up off her chair and manhandle her onto her seat. It is a very uncomfortable experience for her, as the workers did not ask whether she could get on herself.

  8. When the plane lands, everyone leaves the plane and she is the last person left. She waits 20 minutes for the crew-members to come for her in an aisle chair, and she is met with some unfortunate news. Her power chair has been broken while being stored with all the luggage and she will have to be reimbursed and taken away in a loaner wheelchair.

  9. Considering the emotional connection she has with her chair, this is heartbreaking and frustrating for her, as her airplane experience was a complete disaster.
