WHRO VA TV Classroom | Looking to Learn Discussion Guides | Close Looking Guides | Printable Posters | Slow Art Day
We partnered with WHRO's VA TV Classroom to produce this video series to create quick learning opportunities at home. Activities include Close Looking and Making exercises.
These discussion guides are designed to accompany our art and storytime family program, Looking to Learn.
Children ages 3-8 and their caregivers are invited to join us each month as we look, learn, and make in response to themes from our current exhibitions. This live streamed program for families will include close-looking at artwork, reading of a storybook and a making activity inspired by the theme. Looking to Learn encourages valuable social emotional skills that help children ages 3-8 build and develop greater empathy and respect for their peers and community. Register for upcoming programs on our Events page.
Close Looking Questions are designed to help learners of all ages think more critically about themes in our upcoming exhibitions. These questions call out important aspects of the artwork, the artist, and their message. These can be used individually or shared with your digital classroom as a supplement to a lesson. Slow Art Day is a global event with a simple mission: help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art. When people look slowly at a piece of art they make discoveries. The most important discovery they make is that they can see and experience art without an expert (or expertise).
MOCA has created a Slow Art Day guide below which you can download and use to look closely and critically at art from home. Slow Art Day 2020 was on Saturday, April 4, but you can still make your project now.
Share your thoughts and discoveries with us @VirginiaMOCA or #VirtualVAMOCA!
