How to take recordings

Go outside during the time window (7-9pm between 1-15 October), stand somewhere away from human noise, and take a 2 minute recording. Please use a voice memo app, rather than video. There are many apps that are free to use; if you use the ones we recommend then all the recordings are of consistent quality. It doesn't matter if frogs are calling or not--the absence of frogs is important information!

IOS Users

  • Open Voice Memos (this may be in your "Extras" folder).

  • When you are ready to record, press the red button at the bottom of the screen.

  • Record for a full 2 minutes.

  • Stop the recording by pressing the red square at the bottom of the screen.

  • The recording will be listed on your screen. Rename the recording with the latitude and longitude (see instructions for recording this)

  • Press the three dots on the bottom left of your screen. Choose the option to "share". See instructions below for submission.

Android Users

  • Download a recording app from Play Store (Easy Voice Recorder works well and is free; the following instructions are for that app).

  • If you are able to adjust settings, set sound quality to "high" and mic preset to "Meetings and lectures" or "Music and raw sound" (or similar settings in your app).

  • When you are ready to record, press the red button at the bottom of the screen.

  • Record for a full 2 minutes.

  • Stop the recording by pressing the red button, then click on the checkmark to save it.

  • The recording will be listed on your screen. Press the three dots to the left, choose the option to "share". See instructions below for submission.

How to save/share your location

  • Open up google maps while you are at your recording location.

  • Hold your finger on the blue dot that shows your location. You might need to zoom into your location to drop pin into your blue dot. You should see that you have a dropped pin.

  • Click “share”, then scroll until you see “copy to clipboard”.

  • Paste the copied pin into your email with the recording.

  • Or you can send the pin directly via email to vi.frogcount@gmail.com. This is less preferable as the files can become separated.

If you do not have google maps, please email us for an alternate mapping app.

How to submit recordings

  • When you have finished and saved your recording, click on the share icon in the recording app and select email.

  • Paste your location pin into the body of the email with the recording file.

  • Add the address: vi.frogcount@gmail.com and click send!
