2015 Frog Count Results

The 2015 Great VI Frog Count was the first ever citizen science project to survey frogs across the Virgin Islands during a short period of time. Members of the community were invited to submit environmental recordings, taken on cell phones, along with location coordinates, collected between 7-9pm between 1-15 October. We received 277 recordings from 121 contributors across St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, as well as Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Water Island. Five frog species were detected, out of a known species pool of 7. All recordings were listened to for frog presence/absence and the locations were mapped. These maps illustrate the distribution of these submissions. We can use these maps to explore patterns in species habitat use, overlap with other species, and, potentially, changes in distribution or species associations over time.

The 2015 recordings are archived at the Center for Open Science under the Great VI Frog Count project.
