My research focuses on the cultural, artistic, and spiritual encounters between America and East Asia and the subsequent imagining of racial geographies in American literature. I'm interested in how Asian cultural objects and references meld into prominent American novels, what those appearances signify, and how they challenge our preconceptions of what the "American" in American Literature looks like.

Faulkner and the Women in Kimonos
The first section of my dissertation analyzes the documented interest that William Faulkner had in Japan and, in particular, the article of clothing known as the kimono. In this argument, I ask whether we might consider the kimono as itself a text which projects a narrative recounting histories of cultural contact, mixture, and transformation.
