When offering "free speech opinions" we recognize that by adhering to the specifications of we define as "Veterinary Ethics" that some of the opinions might cause negative reactions in others. Some of our positions are politically-incorrect and might trigger backlash. Therefore, the voluntary members of the Veterinary Ethics Society choose to have a closed society, but the membership is available on a need to know basis.
We consider that EVERY person who holds a doctorate in veterinary science is ethical unless proven otherwise. Any veterinarians may use the "Contact Us" below to specifically remove their name from our private list.
Every member of the Veterinary Ethics Society is also a member of the veterinary profession. The term "Veterinarian" means that the individual has proof of graduation from an AVMA Accredited Veterinary Education Institution, and has granted the academic title "Doctor" to that individual.
The term "Licensed Veterinarian" means that the individual is not only academically qualified, but in addition, is licensed by at least one governmental agency. Members who are Certified Veterinary Technicians has a similar requirement.
In the United States, that certification must be a State Veterinary Licensing Board, but in other countries the structure may be different, but equivalent.
No, these are two separate organizations, by design so that the actions of one does not impact the other. The SVME has a greater emphasis on "Medical Ethics" and the VES has a greater emphasis on "Politial and Societal Ethics."
To maintain independence, the Veterinary Ethical Society has no financial or tax position. It is an online group of volunteers. There are no dues and no expenses. One of the tenants of the VES is the we manage ideas, not money. No money changes hands at the VES. If expenses need to be covered, then individual's simpy pay those out of after-tax personal resources. The VES is neither non-profit, or profit driven.
The application fee to join the Veterinary Ethics Society is $10,000 with no guarantee of acceptance. The membership is private, but each person must have a positive net worth and that amount must be less than $10mil. Once a member, there are significant business advantages because each member attempts to use the services of other VES members to increase each others ethical wealth.
We ask ourselves that regularly. The primary reason is that we believe that the veterinary diagnostic education about animal life gives us a different and valuable perspective that might be useful to politicians or others who help steer the society.
We are a professional organization
Only Veterinary Professionals (DVM and CVT) may participate.
We are a political organization
Unlike the SVME, the VES proposes new legislation, and attempts to influence pending legislation.
We are a philosophical organization
Other than politics, we offer opinions and positions, but neither force anyone to do anything, or prevent anyone's direction.
Our overriding position is stated: "Do No Harm. Speak Freely."
