A bamboo cathedral for a piano

A bright idea from visual artist Antoon Versteegde and pianist/composer Bart van Dongen. During November Music, the pair will realize Electric Grand in the Kaaihallen, located directly behind the Verkade factory, a musical building that literally immerses the listener in the sacred sounds of the piano. Each tone of the semi-acoustic grand piano gets its own speaker. These speakers form a 48 meter long installation in which the pianist and audience are located. Versteegde places the speakers in a large bamboo structure. Eighteen pyramids of nine meters high with a total of seventy-two speakers form the Electric Grand, the largest piano in the world.

The pianist crawls behind the keyboard, gives free rein to the musical fantasy while the audience moves freely through the room for half an hour. Every visitor can search for his or her favorite listening spot. Van Dongen inventively prepares the grand piano so that enchanting sounds rise from the grand piano. These sounds are an important part of the compositions he makes especially for this instrument.

Electric Grand is built around a Yamaha CP70B. This acoustic/electric piano has an advanced piezo pickup system that converts the vibrations of the strings into an audio signal. The signals, separated per key, are sent to 72 separate loudspeakers – each piano key has its own loudspeaker – which hang in a bamboo construction in a circle arrangement of 24 meters in diameter or a straight-line arrangement of 48 meters. Thus, the piano keyboard is split up and spatially distributed to create a unique experience, where you can literally experience the instrument from the inside.

Een lumineus idee uit de koker van beeldend kunstenaar Antoon Versteegde en pianist/componist Bart van Dongen. Tijdens November Music realiseert het tweetal in de Kaaihallen gelegen direct achter de Verkadefabriek, Electric Grand, een muzikaal bouwwerk dat de luisteraar letterlijk onderdompelt in de sacrale klanken van de piano. Elke toon van de semi-akoestische vleugel krijgt zijn eigen speaker. Deze speakers vormen een 48 meter lange installatie waar pianist en publiek zich binnenin bevinden. Versteegde plaatst de speakers in een groot bouwwerk van bamboe. Achttien piramides van negen meter hoog waarin totaal tweeënzeventig speakers hangen vormen de Electric Grand, de grootste piano ter wereld.

De pianist kruipt achter het klavier, laat de muzikale fantasie de vrije loop terwijl het publiek zich een half uur vrijelijk door de ruimte beweegt. Iedere bezoeker kan op zoek gaan naar zijn of haar favoriete luisterstek. Van Dongen prepareert de vleugel op inventieve wijze zodat er betoverende klanken uit de vleugel omhoogstijgen. Deze klanken vormen een belangrijk onderdeel van de composities die hij speciaal maakt voor dit instrument.

Electric Grand wordt gebouwd rond een Yamaha CP70B. Deze akoestisch/elektrische piano heeft een geavanceerd piëzo-pickup systeem dat de trillingen van de snaren omzet in een audiosignaal. De per toets gescheiden signalen, worden naar 72 separate geluidsboxen gestuurd – elke pianotoets heeft een eigen luidspreker – die in een bamboe constructie hangen in een cirkelopstelling van 24 meter doorsnee of een rechte-lijn-opstelling van 48 meter. Aldus wordt het pianoklavier opgesplitst en ruimtelijk verspreid tot een unieke beleving, waar je letterlijk het instrument van binnenuit kunt beleven.
