Portland Screw

To pay attention to MEMO (Mass Extinction Monitoring Observatory) on Portland during the Olympic Games in 2012, Antoon Versteegde was asked to build a bamboo structure that, like the museum (designed by architect David Adjaye), was inspired by the fossil shells that only found in Portland. The bamboo structure was built on a sports field in the center of the island with the help of the local residents. It was not until it was completed that it was carried with a united effort to the top of the quarry. There it was placed upright so that it was visible from the stands of the sailing competitions of the Summer Olympics.

Om aandacht te schenken aan MEMO (Mass Extinction Monitoring Observatory) op Portland gedurende de Olympische Spelen in 2012 werd aan Antoon Versteegde gevraagd een bamboe beeld te bouwen dat net als het museum (ontworpen door architect David Adjaye) geïnspireerd was op de fossiele schelpen die alleen op Portland worden gevonden. De bamboe constructie werd gebouwd op een sportveld midden op het eiland met hulp van de lokale bewoners. Pas toen het klaar was werd het met vereende kracht naar de top van de steengroeve gedragen. Daar werd het rechtop geplaatst zodat het zichtbaar was vanaf de tribunes van de zeilwedstrijden van de Olympische Zomerspelen.
