Build a bridge out of bamboo sticks and rubber bands? 17 expectantly skeptical pairs of eyes are fixed on Antoon Versteegde. The artist from Uden in the Netherlands set out to build a bamboo bridge with young people and employees from youth art schools in the Ruhr area on the former state garden show site in Miilheim an der Ruhr parallel to the youth art school day. This campaign is a pilot project as part of the model initiative "The colors of the Ruhr area" of the state working group for cultural education services/youth art schools NRW e.V. Now it's time to unload mountains of bamboo sticks. How many sticks will fit in the wagon? The artist guesses the question in the air. "That's about 3,000 sticks," he says, laughing. "By the way, there are almost 1,500 types of bamboo," he explains to the amazed participants.

After an introductory speech, Antoon Versteegqde picks up two bamboo sticks and ties them with a thick rubber band, like parcel services use. The artist encourages the participants to become active themselves. Don't let them tell you twice. A lively discussion ensues. “How does that work?” “No, you always have to knot an end piece and a tip.” “Oh, I thought so...” In the learning-by-doing process, the participants connect bamboo cane to bamboo cane with great concentration. Up to 25 rubber bands are attached to some nodes. The common whole grows. "It looks good," praises Antoon Versteeqde. He checks the durability of the construction here and gives a tip there.

For 20 years, the artist has been designing temporary bamboo installations in public spaces throughout Europe using the construction technique he developed. Antoon Versteegde is inspired by places and people and relates them to one another through his installations. The result of this process are images that quickly disappear again. Only memories and photos remain after the dismantling of the work of art - and the words of Antoon Versteegde in the ear: »The important thing about a network is not the connections, but the free space.«

You get into a very casual conversation. The participants in Miilheim an der Ruhr among themselves and also the participants with the park visitors who are curious about what is happening in their park. After seven hours of work, the big moment has come: the work of art is erected with combined forces. Satisfied and also a little exhausted, the group admires the impressive bamboo bridge. The lecturer at the youth art school in Gladbeck, Michaela Schaub, sums up what everyone thinks: "It's a lot of fun. It's fascinating how you can build nice structures in a team in a short time with simple means.«

This interactive art campaign, initiated by WERE°STADT Witten, brought youth art school multipliers together. They could use the methods they learned to build bridges with young people for the Ruhr.2010 as a symbol of growing together, crossing borders and understanding.

Een brug bouwen van bamboestokken en elastiekjes? 17 verwachtingsvol-sceptische paar ogen zijn gefixeerd op Antoon Versteegde. De kunstenaar uit Uden in Nederland ging samen met jongeren en medewerkers van jeugdkunstscholen in het Ruhrgebied op het voormalige staatstuinterrein in Miilheim an der Ruhr een bamboebrug bouwen, parallel aan de jeugdkunstacademiedag. Deze campagne is een proefproject in het kader van het modelinitiatief "De kleuren van het Ruhrgebied" van de rijkswerkgroep cultuureducatie/jeugdkunstacademies NRW e.V. (LED) en de jeugdkunstacademies in het Ruhrgebied. "Er zullen tal van acties volgen als bijdrage van de jeugdkunstacademies aan Culturele Hoofdstad Ruhr.2010", legt de educatief medewerker van de LED, Nadja Holl uit

Nu is het tijd om bergen bamboestokken te lossen. Hoeveel stokken passen er in de wagen? De kunstenaar raadt de vraag in de lucht. "Dat zijn zo'n 3.000 stokjes", zegt hij lachend. "Er zijn trouwens bijna 1.500 soorten bamboe", legt hij uit aan de verbaasde deelnemers.

Na een inleidend betoog pakt Antoon Versteegqde twee bamboestokken en bindt ze vast met een dikke rubberen band, zoals pakketdiensten gebruiken. De kunstenaar stimuleert de deelnemers om zelf actief te worden. Laat ze je niet twee keer vertellen. Er ontstaat een levendige discussie. “Hoe werkt dat?” “Nee, je moet altijd een eindstuk en een punt knopen.” “Oh, dat dacht ik al…” In het leerproces verbinden de deelnemers bamboestok met bamboestok met grote concentratie. Aan sommige knooppunten zijn maximaal 25 elastiekjes bevestigd. Het gemeenschappelijke geheel groeit. "Het ziet er goed uit", prijst Antoon Versteeqde. Hij controleert hier de duurzaamheid van de constructie en geeft daar een tip.

Al 20 jaar ontwerpt de kunstenaar met de door hem ontwikkelde bouwtechniek tijdelijke bamboe-installaties in openbare ruimtes in heel Europa. Antoon Versteegde laat zich inspireren door plaatsen en mensen en brengt deze met elkaar in verband door middel van zijn installaties. Het resultaat van dit proces zijn beelden die snel weer verdwijnen. Alleen herinneringen en foto's blijven over na de ontmanteling van het kunstwerk - en de woorden van Antoon Versteegde in het oor: "Het belangrijkste van een netwerk zijn niet de verbindingen, maar de vrije ruimte."

Je raakt in een heel informeel gesprek. De deelnemers aan Miilheim an der Ruhr onderling en ook de deelnemers met de parkbezoekers die nieuwsgierig zijn naar wat er in hun park gebeurt. Na zeven uur werken is het grote moment aangebroken: het kunstwerk wordt met gebundelde krachten opgericht. Tevreden en ook een beetje uitgeput bewondert de groep de indrukwekkende bamboebrug. De docent aan de jeugdkunstacademie in Gladbeck, Michaela Schaub, vat samen wat iedereen denkt: "Het is erg leuk. Het is fascinerend hoe je met eenvoudige middelen in korte tijd in teamverband mooie constructies kunt bouwen.«

Deze interactieve kunstcampagne, geïnitieerd door WERE°STADT Witten, bracht multipliers van de jeugdkunstacademie bij elkaar. Ze konden de methoden die ze leerden gebruiken om bruggen te bouwen met jongeren voor het Ruhrgebied 2010 als een symbool van samen groeien, grenzen overschrijden en begrip.
